He's great at ideas and writing screenplays, possibly one of the greatest of this generation however what he gets praised for is his ability to direct. Now, I'd go as far to say that his directing is bland, repetitive and unoriginal, which if he was the opposite of all these things, I would still not consider him a fantastic director. Also, I believe he has made some of the best original films of the past decade, (I.e Memento, The Prestige), although what made these films great was the writing. His ability to write a movie on any scale is impeccable and I would love to see a Blade Runner screenplay by him. However, him being a choice to direct a Blade Runner sequel I just cannot see. One of the things that made the original great and helps it stand the test of time is Scott's original direction of the film. His aesthetic that he set up was unlike anything the world has ever seen before and is immediately iconic. I firmly believe that Villeneuve is the perfect choice to DIRECT this film. His films have an original aesthetic to them, with the help of Roger Deakins and from what I've seen, the cinematography is unlike anything I've seen from Cinema in a while. Villeneuve is similar to the early works of Scott also in that he uses subtlety which is sorely lacking from films now which this film has the potential to bring to the forefront again. That way we can see more interesting Science Fiction movies which is what Blade Runner, over a long period of time, managed to achieve. Villeneuve already showed this direction in Arrival most notably, but what he will do in Blade Runner 2049 has the potential to be a milestone in the future of cinema, which I'm afraid Nolan would not achieve to the extent as Villeneuve as the director.
