Looks as boring as the first

Scott has made great movies and two of my favorites but the first failed for a reason. It was excruciatingly boring. The visuals were admittingly jaw dropping when I saw it at the theatre back in 82 but the performances were stilted and the movie lacked energy. After seeing Villanueve's latest tedious borefest Arrival I fear that the only ones that will like this movie are art house lovers or the ones that think they know something we don't; which of course is not true. Intelligent sci fi movies don't have to be a slog to sit through.

As someone who really enjoyed the original (though not in 82, I'm not that old) as well as 'art house' movies, I'm really looking forward to this. It's a different type of sci-fi movie. Some can be action packed and exciting, some can be cerebral and boring, doesn't make them any less enjoyable for those they're aimed towards.

If you didn't like the first one, and don't like the look of this one either, that sounds great for me, I hope its a very similar feeling movie.

You realize this is more of a teaser than an actual trailer right? If you thought the first was boring and didn't care for it why are you here posting about this one?

Do you think Blade Runners cult fans wanted it to become an action CGI fest or some bullsh!t? I think i'll take my slow moody and rainy atmospheric Blade Runner over mindless violence and cheesy one liners thanks. I want to see a movie where I can be immersed in it, and not be force fed chaos and ridiculousness at every turn.

Blade Runner as a universe simply has less violence than the worlds Denis did in the past, it's not about drug cartels, children being kidnapped etc. This will be more existential.

Relax, no need to get butt hurt because someone has an opinion different than yours. He has every right to say what he wants about the original, just as much as you appear to have as much right to defend it.

Existential movies suck. Cerebral sci fi movies do not need to be tedious affairs either. 2010 is a perfect example. No laser fights or any CGI and what's wrong with CGI. Look how beautiful the Star Trek movies look.

reply

If the only reason you were interested in the sequel was because you liked the visuals in the original, maybe you should spend less time watching movies and more time in art museums.

reply

I wonder what sci-fi movies you do like.

reply

Probably transformers

Aliens

More of an action movie with a sci-fi backdrop, its predecessor is total sci-fi though. A great movie but not deserving of being listed as "the BEST" of the genre.

Terminator movies

Only the first two.

Matrix Reloaded

Seriously?

2010

Over 2001? I hope not.

Tron remake

There was no Tron remake. Are you from some parallel universe where that film was remade?

War of the Worlds original and remake

Original yes, remake...Seriously?

Half of the Star Wars and Treks

Star Trek is sci-fi, Star Wars however is pure fantasy. There are some sci-fi elements though.

I Robot

The 2004 Will Smith film that retrofitted Isaac Asimov's intellectually complex material into standard popcorn summer fare? Not a bad movie, but not top of the line science fiction filmmaking.

Predator

Besides the alien aspect, the movie doesn't have strong sci-fi rooting. I wouldn't count it as "best" sci-fi in a list.

Rest of your list is fine, however.

Blade Runner fans want an intelligent thought provoking film. They don't want some mindless CGI fest, the kind of thing Hollywood is so good at these days. Let's hope this film does just that.

reply

Tron
No. I. Forgot that it was a sequel not a remake. My mistake.

reply

Why are you replying to him and not to me? And how did you forget that it was a sequel and not a remake? It clearly was a sequel.

It skipped. You should realize that and I was just remembering movies off the top of my head and forgot it was a sequel. Is there a problem with that? I simply forgot.

reply

But how could you forget if you're listing it as one of the "best"? Shouldn't you know it was a sequel? Listing it would imply you've seen it multiple times.

"I fear that the only ones that will like this movie are art house lovers or the ones that think they know something we don't; which of course is not true."

How do you know it's not true or at least possible?

reply

Because I've been around a long time and I know people see what they want to see and not what's actually there. Like an abstract painting. Anybody with common sense will tell you it's complete nonsense but those who think they're in the know will tell you otherwise. Laughable really.

reply

"Because I've been around a long time and I know people see what they want to see and not what's actually there." But that can be said for everyone, right? I would go further and simply say that people see what they see, period, whether it's what they want to see or are capable of seeing or whatever. Anyway, if it's an abstract painting then it's intended to be understood that way, to be open to multiple readings and interpretations, to engage us as an audience creatively; it's not meant to be reducible in the way you seem to want. I wouldn't say that BR necessarily works on a level that's quite that abstract but because it is presenting its themes to be reflected upon and it is a kind of meditation on those themes then I think it's a fitting enough analogy. I'm not sure what "common sense" necessarily has to do with it or why that would be or should be the final arbiter of any art.

Your talking to a guy who hailed this year's London Has Fallen as one of the best of the year.
