They couldn't find an Italian American to play the lead?
Good Lord. Are the Brits taking all the parts? Next thing you know they'll use one to play Martin Luther King Jr. Oh wait.....

shareI wondered the same thing. All of the other family members were VERY Italian looking. Louis was not.
shareI don't think the brother looked very italion either but it wasn't that big of a deal. I just wanted someone to to do a fine acting job and i believe the main star conveyed that.
shareIt's nothing new, really.
– Who played all-American red, white and blue Superman? Englishman Henry Cavill.
– All American Diana Prince, Wonder Woman? Israeli Gal Gadot.
– New York Superhero Batman? Welshman Christian Bale.
– Katherine Hepburn in The Aviator? Aussie Cate Blanchett
– Steve Jobs? Irishman Michael Fassbender
The list goes on...
There are a lot of good American actors that can easily play any role but their egos are getting in the way. Sorry to point out the reality.

Could the producers of Les Miserables really not find any qualified Frenchwomen to play Fantine and Cosette? They had to use Americans?

Many Italian-Americans are still associated with the mob, and besides in WWII Frank Sinatra, also Italian American, was hated by r 2 veterans for not doing the songs they liked (his hatred of novelty tunes in WW2 and the Korean War being quite documented-it's the reason he left COlumbia Records in 1952) and for his "sweetheart seducing"(i.e., the troops might have been jealous). An Irishman, Bing Crosby led the popular entertainment pack during WWII. Not that there Weren't dedicated Italian-Americans not Mob-associated, Louis Zamperini himself being one and in entertainment, Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians, but maybe they seemed too old fashioned. Maybe it's the Mob thing (esp.after Jersey Boys..?)
Then there also the Italian dictator Mussolini, also Italian American on their side (not to mention some French).

"Many Italian-Americans are still associated with the mob"
What an IGNORANT & prejudiced post.
...maybe it's a mob thing.
Moron. Go enlighten yourself.
I know right, she could have used the guy who was in Jamesy Boy. You see him get shot and Louis comforts him in the beginning
"Remember when you couldn't wait for your life to begin? Then one day it did."
