What a huge step back for Michael B. Jordan

Like going from playing for the bulls to playing for the Wizards.

From Fruitvale Station to this crap.
I thought bigger and better things would be ahead for him after the performance he had in the previous movie.

Tokenism is a pretty illogical concept.

PLOT HOLE: Aspect of a film that is misunderstood, ignored, or missed while using your smart phone.

reply

Not necessarily. It's a practice that's repeated often in Hollywood, especially with minority actors -- whether for PC purposes or just to attach one of the hottest current [insert label here]s into the project somehow.

reply

But then how does one avoid ostensible tokenism? Should they not have any non-whites in their casts or go out of their way to cast two or more?

reply

It is hard to call because it depends on why they want/need the actor for the project. A minority can be casted so that the project can attract minority audiences -- or a minority is casted because they are "hot right now" and the director had a smaller, "universal" supporting role available. It depends...

reply

That didn't really answer the question but ok.

Oh, okay.

reply

Agreed. He never struck me as a comedic actor at all.

reply

Pretty much all actors try to do every type of genre, especially comedy. They seldom limit themselves to only dramatic roles. How is Jordan doing a comedic role so unexpected to you? I've never heard of an actor exclusively doing dramatic roles.

I agree that this doesn't look like the best movie. However, I don't think Michael B. or Miles are in the position yet to be extremely choosy. They have both had their breakout roles, but that doesn't mean they can just start passing up opportunities. At least this movie looks like it might have been somewhat fun to film.

reply

In some ways it is a step back but since he filmed this movie right after Fruitvale Station and he had no idea it was going to change his own career, I don't really see a problem with it. Of course, this movie is not going to be a critical darling but it looks like it will do okay at the box office and maybe expand his fan base a little.

reply

I saw a screener for it tonight. He was pretty good. Of the three friends, he was the least flawed and the most successful. He was going through a divorce and they were trying to cheer him up. It was just a role to show his versatility.

reply

Good to read that, how much screen time did he have compared to Miles? It's pretty clear that Zac, of course, would have the most screen time and what did you think overall about the movie.

reply

his breakout role was Chronicle and/or Friday Night Lights, not Fruitvale Station. (I didn't even enjoy him in FS, i didn't sympathize with his character even though i felt like we were supposed to) but i LOVED him in Chronicle.

And for the person who said they can't see him doing comedy, that was his whole character in Chronicle and i felt like that seemed more natural to him than a dramatic role

the reason people made a big deal about Fruitvale Station was the subject matter, especially given the recent travon martin case. I do think he's a good actor but it wasn't like that role was that important for his career.

And I do think this movie is gona flop because it has no demographic, but it doesnt look like a complete crap rom com, i think it will only do good things for him, give him more mainstream exposure

reply

Funny you should say that, cause for me I almost completely forgot he was in chronicle. I liked that movie, but not for the comedy aspect, so his role was forgetable imo.
The two best roles he was in for me are obviously Wallace in the wire, and Fruitvale. Both rather serious roles, where he flourished.

But you are right that he'll get exposure being in this movie, even tho it's likely to be a horrible movie (these movies usually bomb).

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but Michael B. Jordan was nothing short of amazing in Fruitvale Station.

This is stupid beyond belief. It doesn't matter what you thought of Chronicle and Fruitvale Station. The fact is that the latter has kicked his career into high gear.

reply

At this point in the game, how many have actually seen Fruitvale Station? I mean, it never really got pass being a indie film, so I don't think this film can hurt him at all.

Most actors have a good balance between mainstream films, which help their profile, and indie pictures which show their acting chops.

Maybe he has a passion project he wants to get made, so he has to prop up shirtheads to get funding.

But I agree; MBJ went from Idris Elba to Kevin Durand to Zac Efron?! WTFF!

To be honest, I completely forgot who MBJ was when I first watched Fruitvale Station. I've known Kevin Durand since the early 90's, supported his career ever since. I hope he and MBJ make another film!

He's way too good of actor to be playing in a blah buddy movie. Maybe he just wanted the payday though?

reply

Sure he'll get a paycheck but his cred is going to take a hit.

Epic scene!

It would be killer if MBJ got a role in Guy Ritchie's Wild Bunch sequel.

The Wild Bunch are: Mumbles (Idris Elba), One/Two (Gerard Butler) and their gay getaway driver Handsome Bob (Tom Hardy).

As the happy a personable character in Chronicle, I don't see this as a bad role for him.
