If they were supposed to be people that had a natural immunity or resistance to the deadly virus, why was only one of them female? Why was there only one girl? Why wouldn't there be a roughly equal number of boys and girls in the Trial?

shareThose weren't all of the people who were immune. Most of the testing was in the big lab, then some of them were sent to the maze. So maybe they decided that only male subjects would be sent to that maze.
Or maybe there was another maze for females, there may have been lots of mazes with different sets of test subjects.
Would it be a blessing or a curse to be the one male in a maze of young girls?

We'll learn in this movie that there was another maze, identical the the one in the first movie, but this maze was all girls with one boy who came at the end.

shareIf there were many girls, the boys would be too busy chasing girls then worry about escaping the maze. After all everything was provided for them, shelter and women were they could start families.
Maybe that one girl was supposed to encourage dissent among the males and create a different thought patterns.
