Biggest Flop In Kevin Costner Career

A 1997 action-adventure dystopian movie, produced and directed by Kevin Costner himself, The Postman follows a nomadic traveler known as the Postman (Kevin Costner), who wanders through the USA delivering old mail. In a world where life is bleak and people have lost faith in everything, the Postman rekindles people’s faith in the US government, while at the same time finding romantic love and clashing with a dictatorial general.

Although The Postman ran on an $80 million budget, it only made $20.8 million at the box office worldwide, leading to another flop for Costner. Critics destroyed the movie, and also criticized Costner’s decision to cast himself as the lead in The Postman. Though the movie didn’t win any sought-after awards, it did win five Golden Raspberry Awards, including a nomination for Worst Picture.

Horizon is expected to be an even bigger flop.

The Postman was a decent movie and I liked it. just dont think people are interested in 3 hour western movies anymore. he would have better off to stop being a dick and to finish Yellowstone. thats what people want to see these days.

reply

not true

it still all comes down to quality rather then duration

then again, I see a lot of BS sfx-filled 'epics' (3 hours long) that get major views - so perhaps quality is not even the key.

reply

thats because they are big dumb stupid movies with simple plots with splosions.

no one wants to watch a movie these days with tons of dialogue and no CGI.

Yellowstone has been and was the best modern western until Kevins ego got the best of him, he thought he could create another "dances with wolves" he should have just finished Yellowstone and what was a great series.

reply

I do agree that Yellowstone was decent - and yes, Costner's vision did not seem to pan out (though I haven't seen the horizons film). It seems like he had many things going on at the same time - personal life probs being a big one.

I'd also argue that leaving yellowstone and spend his money on a project which ended up (I assume) being vastly inferior to dances with wolves exacerbated the problem. All in all - this is not a great phase in KC's life, I'd say. Too many mistakes all at the same time - and given his age, I doubt this can be treated as being a learning experience, since he doesn't have much time left for acting/directing/personal life.

reply

I wish he would have finished Yellowstone too, however, I watched the first Horizon movie, and it wasn’t bad at all. I enjoyed it.

*explosions

explosions are for smart people. splosions are for dumb people.

Horizon might reach $15M by Friday. Next week about $20M
There are som legs there but still a massive flop.

reply

Yes, Horizon just made $15 million today.
That is $7.5 million in hard cash in Kevin Costner pocket.

reply

Only means he has put off repossession

reply

80M in 1997 = $157M in 2024
20.8M in 1997 = $40.9M in 2024

That's a massive $116M shortfall

Horizon Part I's budget was $50M (combined with Part II, the budget was $100M). Horizon Part I drew $38.2M in the boxoffice

So The Postman was still a bigger flop

And what's your point? Do you like seeing people fail? Does it make you feel better about your life? Costner has had a very successful career otherwise.
