What are the reasons it succeeded as much as it did?

Many said it would be a summer flop. Personally, I think strong word of mouth is the reason it did so well and gave it legs to get close to $1B or beyond. Some say its the lack of wokeness. The timing of pandemic restrictions loosening could have played a part too. Or a combination of all these factors? Thoughts?

Very much the right timing. Had this film been released during a typically crowded blockbuster box office year, it probably would have performed on par with Tom Cruise's usual numbers. And a feel good ass kicking movie that doesn't piss off huge swaths of the population is exactly what was needed right now. Big move by Cruise. I think he won over a lot of new fans who will now excitedly support the next Mission Impossible.
