We are never told the name of the country that Maverick and Co are being sent to. However, the mention of an enriched unranium plant is a dead give away. It's clearly Iran, who are still regarded by a threat to the region by both Israel and Saudi Arabia. The film makers decided it best not to name a specific country.
shareyea. But was it needed though. I'll be honest, I just watched the original Top Gun on Monday before seeing this and I still can't tell you who the enemy is at the end of the film. Sometimes less details are more. We just need to know they are the 'bad guys.' Maybe my dumb female mind is not right for these type of movies (which is why I never cared for the original) Or I'm just used to the MCU fluff; but I enjoyed how this film didn't try and be super details and stuck to the 'fun summer movie' trope.
Knowing the enemy wasn't necessary. Those were the orders to follow. if that makes sense.

shareIt does make sense. If a plot is too complicated and hard to follow then the end result is a movie that is lesser than it could've been with a less complicated, less detailed story.

The other dead give-away is that the country still has operational F-14s. Iran was sold something like 80 F-14s back in the 70s and they continue to maintain them to this day.
The Shah of Iran went on a mad shopping spree for Western weapons in 1970s. Those were the days when Iran was the West's friend.

shareI am pretty sure they did NOT say the word "Iran" in the movie. There was one point where someone said something that sounded like "Iran", which briefly surprised me until I realised that I had misheard it. I can't remember what was the word that was actually said.
They didn't say which country the mission was located in. Honestly it looked more like Russia to me. I know Iran has mountains, but the geography showed these snowy mountains seemingly close to a coastline. Could had also been North Korea but they already have nukes.

It 'may' not be in Iran territory but the adversary is definitely Iranian. I mentioned it could be some host country allowing them to build nuke silos there. As for sea level, could be a mess up, who knows, fiction in the end but we still know who the adversary are.

Iran is the only country other than the US that had F-14s. But We’re in Iran does it have snow at sea-level?
That's what I thought too. That much snow so close to the sea couldn't be in Iran. Maybe North Korea? Although of course the real answer is: it is meant to be a fictional country!

I don't think that's any different than the original.
I don't think that's much different than the trope in general. The good guys get lights on their faces, the bad guys are faceless.
It's that way over and over again in many films.
It was that way in the Original Top Gun so I don't consider a faceless enemy to be that big of a deal.

shareTo the people saying it’s obviously Iran, they are wrong. They made in intentionally vague and checked several boxes so the audience can insert whoever in and not upset the hundreds of countries the movie will be watched.
