The "enemy" is.....

We are never told the name of the country that Maverick and Co are being sent to. However, the mention of an enriched unranium plant is a dead give away. It's clearly Iran, who are still regarded by a threat to the region by both Israel and Saudi Arabia. The film makers decided it best not to name a specific country.

reply

yea. But was it needed though. I'll be honest, I just watched the original Top Gun on Monday before seeing this and I still can't tell you who the enemy is at the end of the film. Sometimes less details are more. We just need to know they are the 'bad guys.' Maybe my dumb female mind is not right for these type of movies (which is why I never cared for the original) Or I'm just used to the MCU fluff; but I enjoyed how this film didn't try and be super details and stuck to the 'fun summer movie' trope.

Knowing the enemy wasn't necessary. Those were the orders to follow. if that makes sense.

reply

Sometimes less details are more. Thats what you posted. That makes absolutely no sense.

reply

It looks like you've found a plot hole in her post. You never cease to amaze.

reply

Well..."sometimes less is more" is one of the most common cliches there is.....must be a reason.

reply

I never heard of anyone ever saying that

reply

Then you are very sheltered

reply

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

reply

It does make sense. If a plot is too complicated and hard to follow then the end result is a movie that is lesser than it could've been with a less complicated, less detailed story.

reply

Yes, obviously Iran. I was so certain of this that I thought they DID say it was Iran earlier in the film, though apparently they did not.

The other dead give-away is that the country still has operational F-14s. Iran was sold something like 80 F-14s back in the 70s and they continue to maintain them to this day.

reply

The Shah of Iran went on a mad shopping spree for Western weapons in 1970s. Those were the days when Iran was the West's friend.

reply

In my review I clearly stated it was Iran because they said it was Iran. I dun get how people didn't think this. They did say who the enemy was during the mission briefing. That or a country that allowed Iran to build a nuke silo there and Russia supplying them with 5th gen fighters.

reply

I am pretty sure they did NOT say the word "Iran" in the movie. There was one point where someone said something that sounded like "Iran", which briefly surprised me until I realised that I had misheard it. I can't remember what was the word that was actually said.

reply

They didn't say which country the mission was located in. Honestly it looked more like Russia to me. I know Iran has mountains, but the geography showed these snowy mountains seemingly close to a coastline. Could had also been North Korea but they already have nukes.

reply

They mentioned Iranian Nuclear Silo twice. When Maverick first meets Vice Admiral 'Cyclone' and just before the mission start in the aircraft carrier below deck. Another indicator it was Iran was the F-14's. No other nation uses them except Iran. I knew it right away there once I saw the F-14's as the enemy.

I've seen several people mention the F-14 as evidence that this is Iran. However, a lot of other have also mentioned the snow covered mountains at sea level, which means it cannot be Iran.

One thing I have not seen from anyone, nor do I remember from the movie myself, is the actual verbal reference to Iran that you cite. They mentioned an Iranian nuclear silo? I only recall them discussing the target itself, the uranium enrichment plant.

reply

It 'may' not be in Iran territory but the adversary is definitely Iranian. I mentioned it could be some host country allowing them to build nuke silos there. As for sea level, could be a mess up, who knows, fiction in the end but we still know who the adversary are.

Caspian Sea so it's possible.

reply

Certainly it's Iran.

Though I could have sword I saw Japanese markings on those enemy fighters.

reply

Iran is the only country other than the US that had F-14s. But We’re in Iran does it have snow at sea-level?

reply

That's what I thought too. That much snow so close to the sea couldn't be in Iran. Maybe North Korea? Although of course the real answer is: it is meant to be a fictional country!

reply

To be fair, it was only a single F-14. Possible that the "rogue nation" bought one of Iran's.

reply

During Mitchell's briefing they marked at least 3 F14.

reply

OK it's Iran then

reply

They certainly can not film it in Iran, can they?

reply

They never mentioned who the enemy in the skirmish in the first Top Gun movie was, neither. Maybe mentioning specific enemy nations DATES these movies?

reply

It was never really established definitively but it doesnt really matter to me.

reply

Gotta love how they played it safe by not only refusing to name the enemy, but giving them face concealing helmets. The enemy can be whatever the audience wants them to be!

reply

Indeed. I pictured it being Dan Gordon, who bullied me in 3rd grade.

Gave Maverick and Rooster some real stakes in my mind.

reply

I don't think that's any different than the original.

I don't think that's much different than the trope in general. The good guys get lights on their faces, the bad guys are faceless.

It's that way over and over again in many films.

reply

It was that way in the Original Top Gun so I don't consider a faceless enemy to be that big of a deal.

reply

The faceless enemy pilots actually made them more menacing!

reply

To the people saying it’s obviously Iran, they are wrong. They made in intentionally vague and checked several boxes so the audience can insert whoever in and not upset the hundreds of countries the movie will be watched.
