FRIDAY EVENING UPDATE: Top Gun: Maverick at this Friday night hour is on its way to a $51M Opening day (which includes $19.3M previews). It would not be shocking to wake up on Saturday morning and see that the sequel has edged out Iron Man 2 ($51.2M) to become Paramount’s top opening day ever. Already, the sequel is Tom Cruise’s best opening day ever in U.S./Canada besting Mission: Impossible – Fallout‘s first day of $22.8M by 124%.

Best non-woke movie in the past 10 years, I hope Tom wins some kind of award for this. He will go in the record books as the best action star of any generation.

I’m watching this again. I still marvel at the skill of the editing and writing that went into it. In 3 sentences they establish what the conflict between the bureaucracy and Maverick will be. That’s deft. What then hit me was that we have Ed Harris—who was John fucking Glenn, as in, “Godspeed, John Glenn!”—looming large and manly in this, a wonderful cross-over between the very under appreciated The Right Stuff and a crowd-pleasing blockbuster. BY the way, “Godspeed” is the most heartfelt blessing in Christianity.

The choreography and editing of the flight-deck crews and the fighter pilots on the carrier deck probably took more money and effort than 20 B-movies put together—and it shows. “The money is up on the screen,” which is exactly where it should be. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more impressive scene, and that includes Scorsese’s tracking scene in Goodfellas.
