Both DJ Qualls "Ed" and actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa "Tagomi" didn't sign up for the 4th season.
Tagomi was assassinated as a result while Ed was just written off !
I got the impression he did that final act of rebellion for Frank and then went with his cowboyfriend back to the Neutral Zone.
That said, it is a little odd that this guy for whom two relationships (Frank and Julian) meant everything would suddenly stop fighting for their cause and never tried to find Juliana again.
He was supposed to have died of some mysterious wasting disease that was affecting the gays, which would have been revealed to be AIDS, but when the actor wasn’t available the whole plan was scrapped
