So I binged my way thru season 1 in prep for season 2.
Thankfully, the last 3 episodes were everything I had hoped this series could be, so I'm stoked again for season 2. Have to say it was a bit of a slog getting there though.
The rather generic pretty boy/pretty gal leads are less than compelling. Then again, they have to act their way thru some pretty soapy melodrama.
But then there's Rufus Sewell. Good God. When it came time to submit to the Emmy board for consideration, I hope they sent the scene (SPOILER) where the doctor breaks the news about his son. What riveting, understated and heartbreaking work. That's how you write and act villains, folks. By making them human beings we can relate to. Which, of course, makes them all that much scarier. Fabulous stuff.
I found the whole Japanese contingent and their storyline well plotted and acted as well.
Agreed. Smith's and Kido's storylines are the ones I most care about. Also Smith and Kido are kinda mirroring each other in a way, which makes it more compelling. The actor who plays the Trade Minister is great and you feel real empathy for his character.
I SO agree. I just practically wrote a Valentine to him on IMDb. I noticed him in something else - I just wish I could remember what it was. The guy is amazing.
YES he's a legend. I'm only a few episodes in but in season 1 episode 2, when he is ambushed by the resistance fighter with machine guns. He takes them down with a pistol!
Agreed. That scene is suberb...when I heard he got a nom for a critics' choice award last year for TMITHC, I immediately thought it was that 1x08 scene.
I have not watched S2 yet because I promised to wait till Christmas, but I believe as the Smith's family storyline deepens, he will have plenty of chances to be awesome and I have heard his performance is in fact awesome. I do really hope he gets an Emmy Nomination.
He's one of my fave actors since always, I highly respect him ... I've seen him for the first time when I was I think 16 or so in a movie called Dark City and I haven't stopped following his career since.
Also, being a period drama lover and a theatre lover, I am quite lucky because he starred in so many period dramas (some better products than others, but his performance was always worthy)and he has been on stage often throughout his career. Last year for example he was amazing in 'Closer' by Patrick Marber.
Anyway, talking about range, if you live in the US as I suppose you do, you will see him play the romantic lead in the first 5 episode of the new drama 'Victoria' (about Queen Victoria) on PBS and you will hardly recognize him, even the way he walks is different. He plays Victoria's Prime Minister and first love, Lord Melbourne, a noble, honorable, kind hearted, selfless man whose story is quite sad ... I would call him a Jane-Austen-sort-of-hero if not for the fact that Jane Austen gave those kind of characters their happy ending and he gets none (it's not a spoiler, it's in history that Victoria married Albert) ...and he conveys the kindness and the pain of this man in such a convincing way that he makes it literally impossible for the viewer not to feel empathy (though you never see him cry or scream and he never over acts, quite the opposite). People went crazy for him in that role in the UK (+ streamers all around the world, me included), he broke hearts with his subtle performance.
Or you could try Shakespeare retold, The Taming of the Shrew if you like comedy. He is hilarious and he rocks high heels better than I do. I could be wrong but I think he got a BAFTA nom for this one.
I would add I had the chance to talk with him in London last week after I saw him play 'Art' by Yasmina Reza and he was the kindest down to earth guy of all, which is not a requisite but certainly a nice bonus.
elisabettaduo: Dark City was GREAT! You are in for a treat, I can tell you: Season 2 is even better than the first! In the beginning I feared the show would go "Lost", but on the contrary it has opened like a cherry blossom. :)
I have been a fan since Dark City as well, and I think he's the best thing about this show, because he's not a cartoony, mustache twirling villain. If you watch him in interviews, he's very knowledgeable about the Nazis and Hitler. He's done lots of research for the role, obviously.
