John Smith would have never ascended to such a high rank

While it's plausible that a defeated US Military member could be swayed to join the ranks of the occupying victors because the benefits are clear for both sides, I find it highly unrealistic that Nazi high command would ever let that person ascend beyond a fairly low ranking post, for a number of reasons:

- He's clearly shown that his loyalties can change & could therefore never be fully trusted.

- He was of an adult age when he drank the Nazi kool-aid, and therefore could never be considered fully indoctrinated or intellectually galvanized to the cause, as evidenced in the case of Thomas, who was brainwashed from such a young age that he turned himself in, whereas John couldn't.

More likely, Nazi high command would have 'fire-walled' any ascension beyond a certain level as a matter of a safeguard policy, because they'd have considered the aforementioned points. And, history has shown the Nazis were experts in picking the "right" people for the "right" jobs.

I think that the idea of a high ranking US citizen would be very appealing to the Nazis or any force that would come in- It gives him some good ideas for COIN operations and for those who decided to become one of the Nazis it provides them with hope of a better future.

I think it is entirely plausible that a conquering force would promote nationals to a high rank there are tons of benefits. And as you can see in a few scenes even with his rank he is not considered one of them fully and without giving away the story there is a comment about the Iron Guard salute that solidifies that point.

Your point would be more valid if he were posted in Germany. In US it makes a ton of sense.

You are familiar with Quizzling in Norway, Germany liked have nationals in charge in occupied countries.

Wrong. The entire government of America is going to be made up of Americans in a few years. Same thing happened in real life in Germany after WWII. At first Americans, French, Russians, and British ran everything with the help of German Collaborators, and eventually those German collaborators went on to run the German Government and German Military (within NATO structure) all by themselves. Ditto for Poland after the Soviets conquered it. Polish born Communists were placed in power and ran the country and military.

Aren't elected officials in the US all Americans already? I don't understand your point.

After WWII many nazis was involved both in FRG and DDR. In DDR it was even Generalfeldmarschall Friedrich Paulus, German commander in Stalingrad battle.

It was a matter of critics that de-nazification was not made properly and thousands of officers involved nazi crimes reached very high positions in decade or two after WWII.

So, why is will be different in MITHC universe?
