Am I the only person who enjoyed the movie?

I stumbled onto the movie and never read the book or even saw the movie trailer..

And i really enjoyed the film! I even had one or two tears at the end and didn't even guess the twist until it had happened.

I would probably give it a 7/10 (Harrison's acting could have been better). I'm giving that score based on the merits it had as a film rather than as an adaptation from the novel.

I psychotically love the books as well as the movie. Asa Butterfield was perfect as Ender. It sucks there won't be more.

It wasn't that I didn't like the rain... I just never saw the rainbows.

But the world rejoices!!!!

reply

Why won't there be more? I don't know anything about where this movie came from, so I don't understand why there wouldn't be a sequel or something... or "more", as you put it.

the movie did really bad in the box office. It lost money. it cost a lot to make and it didn't get any profit back.

No Profit, no sequels

reply

Oh good, someone explained for me. Meant to respond but forgot.

i wish there was more too, the movie was great, i am still wondering if all the simulations were really battles or only the ____ one.
His name was Robert Paulson

reply

Pity, really. I thought more that this was because the movie was too short and didn't expand enough on Ender's grief and on events that followed. With a such a grand film and story, it's really important to build and showcase a greater universe in and around it in order to both immerse the viewer and also leave a sufficient feeling of closure.

reply

It made just a bit more than the costs, didn't lose money.
The budget was big for only one movie.

reply

are you counting publicity and ad money???

reply

I agree, I couldn't think of a more perfect choice for Ender than Asa. But, overall, the movie just didn't translate well from the books.

I'm not blaming Card or the script writers since I couldn't think of a better way to adapt the story into a screenplay. It's just that the end product that made it to the screen was severely lacking.

Maybe this is just one of those books that was simply unadaptable to the big screen.

Too bad, because I would have loved to see Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, or even the Shadow series. But it looks like that'll never happen after the box office performance of this movie.

reply

I agree.

Beautiful filmmaking, an inspiration.

reply

Yep. I think they failed with the trailer and people didn't realize it wasn't a child movie.

reply

I enjoyed the movie too. Surely it is not perfect, not even close to the perfect but I've already seen it several times and it grew on me. The book will always be better for me, but the film also had good aspects.

I really liked the movie. It isn't perfect, but it did a good job with the source material. Afterwards I read the mini-story, and now I'm reading the novel Ender's Game.

"Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."

it's a solid movie and it was a solid cast with Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfield, Ben Kingsley, and Harrison Ford. If you liked the movie, you'll probably enjoy the novels. I read Ender's Game a short while after and it is a lovely read and made me appreciate how the film was able to streamline things and still gave the story a new life. Ender's Shadow is a nice tale about Bean. would you ever venture into the books?

reply

If Orson Scott Card liked it, and Authors rarely like their works in Movie format, then I think I liked it as well. According to Card, they got the main gist of the book.

It took me three full viewings to understand that, this is not a story about how to beat an enemy, it's about discovering that sometimes, Communication is better than Bombs Busting in Air.

reply

That was the first thing I noticed about the movie, which is why I liked it.

This wasn't a mindless action flick. It was an antiwar story.

reply

I didn't read the book ether but the movie is childish and forgettable.

reply

I really enjoyed it and the CG was the best I've seen since Pacific Rim.

Solid 8/10

reply

You should watch it with the directors cut. You will be shocked how many shoots you thought used actual actors/actresses but where completely cgi (Petra and Ender jumping into no gravity is on shoot that amazes me is entirely cgi).

I loved it.

I saw it woth a heap of friends who were totally unfamiliar with the source material. They came out all positive about it and didnt pick up on the plot twist until it occured.

Books are better still.

I was really happy with the conceptualisation for the arena. Very much how I invisioned it when O read the books.

reply

I like the movie - when I judged it on its own merits, not on those of the book.
