Skyline was awesome

You guys are some straight up haters. Skyline was a very good movie with the potentional for an amazing sequel. The acting was not nearly as bad as some of these people would have you believe. The special effects are top knotch and the ending is a very nice sci-fi cliffhanger. I think that's why alot of people are talking poorly about the movie, they wanted to see more and they didn't get to.

reply

agree. underrated movie. can wait for this

"Skyline is a trainwreck so horrific it cannot possibly be explained without video evidence. It is not only the worst movie released in 2011, it may well be the worst film ever to receive a theatrical release. It’s illogical, stupid and boring. It walks when it should run and runs when it should have ended twenty minutes ago. The premise is beyond any acceptable level of awful. The script, if there even was one, feels like it was hastily written in crayon on generic toilet paper. The acting is shoddy. The characters are unlikable. The first act sucks. The second act sucks even more. And the third act, through sheer unstoppable suck momentum, builds and builds like a sick avalanche of devastating putrescence until man, woman and child alike are all devoured by its gaping suck hole."

-best review of it I could find. I understand some people may have liked it, I'll never understand why.

reply

That negative review is so lacking in specifics that it could apply to any movie.

reply

i couldnt agree more. this movie is amazing. differant yet tastful. i look forward to a sequel. there is so much that i still want to know however. hopfully a sequel can provide.

reply

Nope you guys are way off. This movie was terrible and so were the actors. The only thing that was good was the CGI.

reply

I like that you pass that off as fact.

Loved it myself, though the brain-thing is a bit dorky and nonsensical... though I love how its NOT explained (yet) too. -shrug-

reply

It was explained. And I thought it was good. I can't wait for 2. The only sucky part is having to justify liking it to pretty much 70% of the people I know who've seen it.

Spoiler!

I don't think it was dorky at all. At least it made sense to me.

Human beings are powered by food. It contains everything that metabolizes into energy for us to live. We eat meat, veggies, etc. and our body takes all the nutrients out to 'build' us (add mass, repair cells, provide energy to our nervous system, etc.)

Our brain controls this entire process and carries millions of electrical signals to every part of our body. That's our central nervous system. Think of it as the Load Center where all your circuit breakers are in your apt/home.

These aliens have evolved beyond needing nutrients or food (that we see), what they need directly is the electrical energy the CNS provides, and they apparently get that in some way from the human brain. Our brains however, require these nutrients and food that our bodies metabolize so eventually they're 'used' up and die, even quicker if the Alien is damaged and uses it to quickly repair itself.

Therefore they're harvesting us as batteries. That was the idea from the Matrix as well except they used the entire human body as a 'cell' that provided bioelectrical energy and body heat.

Essentially they're using our brains as 'food', but not in a literal sense, they're using them as batteries to power and repair themselves, the way we use nutrients to metabolize and create energy for us.

What if: the sun was about to go supernova and the aliens were really just trying to save humanity from extinction?

What if: the earlier probes were used to collect small groups of humans so the aliens could figure out how to save us. And then, just maybe, the 'monsters' we see later are either drones sent out to collect our essence via the preservation of our minds, or human piloted bio-mechanical contraptions designed by the aliens to allow us to save ourselves?

The thing that struck me about this movie was how humans were treated just as we treat other species we consider "lesser". In fact, it looked like a retelling of the destruction of the passenger pigeon!

The passenger pigeon was once so numerous, the flocks would blot out the sun as they passed. People went on killing sprees when they saw this, and shot them by the dozens at a time, and merrily threw them into pots (or sold them as delicacies for the pots of others.) Of course, one day people woke up and wondered where all the passenger pigeons went.

The Skyline aliens were shown doing _the exact same thing_.

I think people wouldn't like this movie, just because they know that we would have no moral grounds to object to being treated this way by a superior species. We wouldn't like being treated this way, but we do have such a vested interest in treating others this way, we don't like to think what would happen if we found ourselves as the "dumb beasts".

We might think ourselves special, but I bet these aliens do, too, and would insist that what they want automagically trumps what we want - just as we do to our lessers. And why would they want to try to speak with something they consider inferior? We barely try to communicate, as well. Yes, there were the experiments with dolphins, apes, and parrots, but most of those have fallen by the wayside and are now ignored. Noam Chomsky, linguist and rabid leftie, was so appalled by the idea of apes using human language that he redefined language itself to take it out of the hands of apes - and also out of the mouths of chidren younger than about 5.

If we were to meet aliens that are "like us", well, the treatment we get in Skyline would be exactly the sort of treatment we could expect.

I can agree that SOME of the acting was terrible, but overall this is a classic B-Movie, with a very good alien story that has not been fully explained yet and incredible visuals that top Avatar, so i'm looking forward to some answers about the alien species in Skyline 2 because the aliens in this movie are freaking creepy as hell!! Plus they hint at something about their species; (SPOILERS) the alien creatures all have strange symbols in their flesh, colored in a darkish yellow. They also seem to be partly machine-like, fleshy organisms. So i think they could make the 2nd movie great if they follow the aliens a little more

reply

Agreed. The CG is the only good thing about this piece of crap. This is by far the only movie I have ever seen in theatres that I regret seeing. Frack this movie. There is no chance in Hell that this sequel will ever be made.

reply

It was incredibly forgettable.

reply

Nope, you are way off ... great sci fi movie. Watching it again right now đŸ˜€

reply

Its a good film, once it gets going, loved the alien threat throughout

reply

I agree! I like this movie so much! Can't wait for Skyline2!!

reply

I just do not understand the negative critics......Do we need a Tom Cruise for a film to be great..? The actors were good..the CGI was good...Hell..even the story wasn't that bad. The alien invasion was more scary and impressive than THE BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES....just loved it....it was likeit would be in a nightmare...that good. That mysterious light, those faces....the brain ripping!!!!...What a find..This is worse scenario alien invasion. I really would like to know what tactical counter measures the Pentagon has thought-up after watching this movie. Can't wait for part 2....If we are lucky some A-status actors will be in que to join the cast and will the budget be tripled.

I agree with most everyone in this thread that Skyline was not as bad a movie as everyone initially said. I only found the ending a bit disappointing, and now it makes sense that they are making a sequel, because the ending scenes seem to hint that Eric Balfour's character's brain and conciousness resurrecting inside the alien body signified mankind's hope and struggle against adversity and overwhelming odds. The colored and glowing brains floating about and the manner in which they were removed seemed way too campy though.

The Aliens' use of a blue colored light to subdue the populace was a plot device. Their civilization and technology was so far advanced, that of course they are going to use whatever technology it takes to make us docile for the harvest. The last thing they would want to do is put themselves at risk to gather us as a food source. Don't get too caught up in the story's use of a mesmerizing light that had such an effect on our will. It could have been any one of the five senses. Drawing the parallel between how they harvest humans, and the way we harvest lesser life forms here on earth, is a valid comparison.

reply

Well, this thread just goes to show that some people will pay to see ANYTHING!

reply

Hahaha, I didn't pay extra to see it.

I do agree that at times the acting was poor. But, there's a consolation for that loss. The premise and how it is executed, and how realistic this particular invasion looks and feels.

I like this movie a lot for some reasons, like an off road car that is used to making it's way down a trail on very heavy terrain, but in this case the terrain is only somewhat bumpy, with such a cool pay off at the end.

One more thing I liked, is just how cool this movie looked. The blue shading of the light that descends, and that is also present like eyes of light on the creatures faces, all coupled with the cinematography of the location it was shot at, just added this really visually attractive element to everything.

Of course their is no way to prove what is plausible and what isn't in the event of an alien invasion on earth, but in this story, it all actually works without too many inconsistencies in terms of the alien designs and how they function. Except for maybe the unexplainable regeneration of the ship after it's hit by the drones missile.

My overall opinion of this movie is:

Wow what an interesting/cool as hell looking result in creativity by these two directors who decided to avoid a big hollywood studio's typical cheesy influence on their vision by financing this film on their own. Loved it for it's originality, and I hope it can spark a trend of teams taking risks to express their vision without it being tampered with by hollywood corporations always/ and only looking to turn a profit.

As far as Skyline vs. Battle LA. Skyline beats Battle LA in every way, except Battle LA has some formidable scenes of combat on the ground, and closer up shots of some of the smaller alien vehicles, which looked and sounded cool.

But, Battle LA went into cheese mode with too much forced sappiness from it's characters and too much music to siphon emotion from the crowd, making it all contrived and grandiose. Give it a break with the crowd manipulation.

Skyline had balls and didn't overuse sappy music during very tense moments, allowing the performances by the actors to do the job instead. Plus, the ending of Skyline was gutsy, unique and could be the set up for one hell of a great premise for Skyline 2.

I have to totally agree with maxwell. I watched this movie without knowing anything about it only that it was about aliens.when watching a movie about this genre i think some people have tendency to expect way too much. i thoroughly enjoyed this movie and was very pleased to hear there is going to be a sequel. bring it on i say.

That's funky how some people are so bothered by the fact that other people actually liked it that they'll take the time to go into a message board for the movie and hate all over everyone, they must be miserable or bored people.

Not many movies get so much love and hate at the same time, so they must be doing something right. I liked the movie, looking forward to the sequel.

reply

Liked Battle: LA better, since we've never seen an alien invasion movie from a soldier's POV.

Didn't like the ending that much. I mean in the sequel is Jarrod gonna tear apart the ship?
