Awful, just awful

A character with no soul, no humanity, just an empty shell of a human being living in an empty world. That's a great start with lots of dramatic potential. I was excited about it but Fassbender is an awful actor. He bored me in almost every scene and he's just so obviously trying to get an oscar nom with cheap method tricks. Especially the worst example is the conversation toward the end with his sister on the couch, should have been powerful and emotional but it was just empty and drowsy. And I also have to say that this movie has some of the WORST camera angles in film history. You could never see the actor's faces! WTF? Overrated performance, a truly dreadful film that someone conceived as an erotic art piece, but just isn't - it has some of the least sexy sex scenes in history - my libido was not enflamed at all, lol! Oh, and Fassbender watched way too much Last Tango in Paris.

I thought Fassbender did a fantastic job portraying his character.

"Especially the worst example is the conversation toward the end with his sister on the couch, should have been powerful and emotional but it was just empty and drowsy"

The scene was very emotional, she was crying and he was being cold towards her. His character had built up anonymity towards his sister for a long time, it was pretty obvious throughout the film. Not everything needs to be explicitly told to you, sometimes the film requires you to read into it.

"this movie has some of the WORST camera angles in film history"

The cinematography was actually one of the highlights of the film, Steve McQueen is a renowned director. The film had some fascinating shots, the sideshot of when Fassbender was crying on the dock, the running scene, the sex scene with the two prostitutes and the sex scene when they were pressed against the window. These are just a few examples of the great directing in Shame.

"my libido was not enflamed at all"

I'm pretty sure this film wasn't intended to be pornographic, a movie about a sex addict would have been ridiculous without erotic scenes

I thought the couch scene was done really well, too, and I thought the scene where he tries to pick up the girl and touches her with the boyfriend a few feet away was amazing. But I also think there were a couple of places in the movie where Fassbender flubbed. When people complain about his acting in this movie, I am surprised that no one mentions the scene where Sissy sings, "New York". He's great in that scene about 95% of the time, but the other 5% of the time is cringeworthy. He is he so obviously trying to get the tear to fall so he can wipe it away; he does that sort-of-not-really subtle eyelid flickering to make the tear drop out of his eye, it makes you want to kill a puppy in front of him to make him actually sad so he cries for real. It doesn't look like his sister is wrenching him out of his emotional numbness; it reads like he is trying really, really hard to cry just a little bit.

i think you miread that scene, her rendition brought tears to his eyes, there was some deep pain coming to the surface, that he tried hard to conceal.

PS. I thought he had feelings for his sister after she shagged the boss BUT i think he saw the innocence in his sister in that song, and didnt want his sister to follow his examples.

Well said, Crb. I'd rather watch paint dry than this awful mess.

As much as I love fassbender lol yeah this movie was :( I even think he has been better in other movies

I just don't understand the hype about this but that's fine. I'm not gonna say crap to anyone who loved it. I could even relate to Brandon and I still thought this was a BS movie

I didn't enjoy it either. I found it cold, pointless and tedious, whilst desperately trying to be "edgy". One of those movies that gets the audience to pat itself on the back for "getting" it and being all grown up.

Did Steve McQueen say that he meant this to be an "erotic art piece?" I'd consider it art, but there is no eroticism in this film. Actually, there might be one single drop and that would be the scene in the hotel room with Marianne.

it has some of the least sexy sex scenes in history - my libido was not enflamed at all, lol!

This film wasn't meant to be sexy or enflame your libido.

I thought this film was raw, gripping with a real insight into an addicts complex mind. I actually felt empathy for the characters fassbender & mulligan . Top notch acting from both.

& I find the sex scenes & nudity were portrayed naturally & not forced just for the sake of nudity.
