They don't say how much time elapsed from when he came clean with his boss (major hint) and to when he showed up at her school. Clearly he had an epiphany and reflection as evidenced by his "essay" and I feel he sobered up and decided to try to make something in Philly with Aimee. She had deep feelings for him and if he was off the sauce and was ready to get serious, I could definitely see it working for them. He smile at the end told me she would at least consider it. People (especially young like him) do grow up and get their act together and he definitely had the catalyst for that. Even in the bar, I think he saw himself becoming that old drunk (and his dad) and came to realize the he COULD get off that path. He had all the tools to become a good man. He showed this numerous times like when he gave Marcus honest and helpful advise about Cassidy, knowing it would only strengthen their relationship and further diminish his chances of winning her back. He also truly wanted to help his friend Ricky without any selfish motivation and he genuinely liked people which was what set him apart from his father. The character arc was pretty clear to me.
