This film is adapted from a novel though, and any other ending would not have provided the right tone. The animal was sacrificed in a very personal way for the hunter Martin charater. He even wept over the body, he knew he had just killed the last of these beautiful creatures but his reason for doing so was just.

I feel stupid that I'm the only one not getting it but I don't understand why Martin did what he did. I know it's been more then 3 years since your comment but you would really help me out if you could explain. You say his reason for killing the last Tasmanian Tiger was just, so please tell me what was the reason? Why did he kill the animal and then make sure his employer can't find it? Why did he call his employer and tell him he doesn't want to be found?
shareIt has been two or more years since I watched it. I'd have to watch it again to answer your question, sorry. If I remember correctly I think he just felt like the animal was being exploited by this corporation in a way just as he was being exploited by them. They wanted him to bring them the last of these animals so they could develop whatever product they were after. I think he just wanted the animal to die a noble death rather than be harvested for commercial means by the company. I'll try to watch it again and then provide a better answer. It's worth another viewing.

shareI think it should have ended with dafoe seeing the tiger like he did, he follows it for a minute and observes it, then he raises his rifle and looks down the sight and it stays like this for a few seconds then it cuts to black and the movie ends
shareThat would have been the cliched route to go. Instead the movie stuck by its convictions. The mother said something along the lines that the animal would be better off dead and that's why he felt that it should be killed.

I can appreciate your desire for a happy ending, but I can't say I find that one to be better. Your ending is way too cliche/predictable. Part of what I liked about this movie is it wasn't typical. The death of some of the characters is what led Martin to do what he did.
Plus, you simply threw too much in there.

Nice. But the ending would have be even better if Martin had paid for cloning of the tiger! The cloning procedure is still very expensive but if can afford it... it's possible!
