Directly drinking the stream water.

I finished watching the movie yesterday night. While I enjoyed the movie, and at felt it was really well acted by Defoe and the kids. I do think the plot could have been better.
My favorite scenes were the hunter in the wild. However as a hiker, one thing that I really didn't like was showing him directly drink water from the stream. Having hiked in a few places across the world(, but not Australia/Tasmania yet), I am aware of the bacteria's present in the stream waters, and have always been told to use a filter or a pill if drinking stream water. I could have forgiven the first time they showed him filling stream water, since he could have used the pill without showing us. However the 2nd time he drinks directly. So is the Tasmanian water so clean you don't need to filter? Or they didn't realize that a true hunter would know that stream water needs filtering.

I know this is an old post, but I think you're missing the point. The stream scenes are not plot holes, they are plot devices. The hunter is an experienced hunter, hiker and bushman. The scenes are to demonstrate that the water in the creeks is untainted and pristine, free from natural and human contamination.

This is the whole point of the film, it's about the destruction of pristine natural environments. Tasmania is one of the few places left on earth that is mostly untouched and yes the water from the creeks in the high country is safe to drink. But the environment is under threat by corporate interests.

At the time there was intense animosity between the loggers (for their jobs) and the environmentalists. The movie is quite true to the facts.

As an aside, did you know that Jarrah and Sassafras are native Australian trees. In the movie, both did not survive. Is that how it will be in the future?
