That's why I wanted to ask, if anyone here has actually been to Tasmania or maybe lives in Tasmania? How realistic is the film about the nature of Tasmania? The movie lets us thik that most of the island is a wild land without any civilization. Is it really so? Or did they just pick the most uninhabited corners to shoot at.
I've lived and worked on the West Coast, where this was shot, a couple of times over the years. Tullah was the location of the house and the pub was the Tullah pub. Some (small) parts are in the Tarkine, near Savage River I suspect - the deep rainforesty bits with all the moss and downed logs. Walls of Jerusalem feature prominently, as does the backside of Cradle Mountain and the high country to the North West of Cradle - most of the snow gum scenes are clearly from in that area. The aerial shots of him driving on a sealed road are all from around the Cradle to Launceston roads. You get glimpses of Mount Murchison, and Tullah lake too. Im sure there was a shot of him driving on Howards Road between Tullah and Queenstown too in there, when he first set off with Mindy.
Most of the island is indeed untouched and hopefully remains that way. The back country to the South and South West of Strathgordon and down to Port Davey is pure wilderness - and mighty awkward to get around in. Not country for the fainthearted and this gave me some elements of doubt on his ability to traverse it at will. A small bivvy like the one we saw him using would work okay, but he would need a -20 bag at least - or better.
Never got a good look at his footwear, dont recall seeing him wearing gaitors - an absolute neccessity. Normally, walking around in that country, you end up with mud from toe to thigh.
I'm watching this movie for the first time. I'm Tasmanian, and all I can think is "he's nowhere near muddy enough to be hiking around the SW Wilderness!"
