Was it a real bear?

It looked very real. I cannot believe they would have Leonardo DiCaprio mauled by a real bear. Did they use some sort of dummy with a real bear whenever you couldn't see his face? That would create a very difficult editing task, I would think.

It was clearly CGI/motion capture

It was special effects. Well done but it didn't move like a real bear.

Bear was real

The bear is British and is a fine, accomplished actor -- just isn't really known in the states. That bear is credited in 11 different films as an actor, and even co-produced two films.

He's a real partier though and has gotten in a lot of trouble lately, getting drunk in clubs and fights and sh*t, bear needs to get his sh*t together

looked fake to me but not bad if it was all CGI. I was surprised by all the hype the bear scene got. People were acting like the bear attack was the most awesome thing ever, some people even saying it was the best thing about the film. I was expecting a 20 minute bear attack with a real bear then it turned out to be just a few minutes and a CGI bear.

Yep, it was real. DeCrapio spent 6 months in the hospital after filming that scene. He damn near died. And he had a bear baby 9 months later.
