I know a lot of fans were disappointed but personally I thought the ending of the DT series was amazing and fitting.
The series has such an epic scope that the whole time I was reading it, I couldn't imagine how it was going to end but King did a great job. Definitely one of his better endings.
I actually decided not to read the last book of the series because I knew King was going to piss me off with a crappy ending. In the end I couldn't restrain myself because I loved the characters in this series so much. And I was right. King screws up every ending.
1 - We've been eagerly anticipating the confrontation between Roland and the Crimson King, imagining how it might go. Then, halfway through the 7th book of a 7 book series we get a new character that, literally, erases the Crimson King. What a disappointment!
2 - Throughout the series, Roland has sacrificed those he loved in pursuit of the Crimson King. Will he ever learn to love and save the people that depend on him? Will that be the key to finally defeating the Crimson King? Nope! He keeps doing his thing and doesn't learn a thing. But, of course, Mr. Magic Pencil comes from nowhere and gives everybody a happy ending. Seriously? No arc for Roland? No epiphany? What is the point of all this?
3 - Roland going back to the beginning of the series? Absolutely perfect! I love it! It was foreshadowed. It makes sense. He has to keep doing it until he gets it right. But...shouldn't he do something different this time? Even if he forgets the previous times through, shouldn't he have learned something that helps him make the right decisions this time? Roland learned nothing. He hasn't grown as a person. Roland is the same. The thing that is different this time is the equipment he starts with. That sucks.
When I pick up a King book, I can't put it down. I absolutely love his characters and the atmosphere he creates. I just wish he would let somebody else write his endings.
I have no argument for point 1. That was a little anti climatic. Reminded of kiling Vas in far cry 3. But hey, i still loved that game
As for point 2. I liked Roland all the more for continuing his quest for the tower depsite the casualties. Also dont think its fair to say he didn't have an arc. He seemed to learn alot from his ka tet but in the end not even that was enough to stop him from reaching the tower.
I totally agree. This was a super hard epic to end, and I think he managed it very well. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the spider-boy but he was pretty menacing and fit into the theme of King's subconscious spitting stuff out at the team.

Disappointed. It felt like King couldn't come up with one and just started over. It should've been Roland at the top blowing his horn causing the rose fields too bloom showing that the worlds were going to renew again
