Book four sucks...

...there, I said it.
We know what happens before the book even starts as it's explained in previous books. So dragging it out for several million pages just makes it painful. I gain little from Wizard and Glass, same goes for Wind Through the Keyhole (which was a fine story, but should have just been it's own book, minus the first 20 pages and the last 5 pages). These two books could be removed from the series and we would be left with a fast paced, action packed, mind blasting adventure.
I'm trying my best to leave spoilers out of this for new readers, but I skip book four on each read through now. My gf said the same about four. The whole time she was just waiting to get out of the world of four and move on to five. I suggested to her that she should skip 4.5 and just read it alone some day if she wants to. She skipped it.
Of course, this is just my opinion.

Side note. I'm fine with the casting so far. I'm confused about the characters though. Sayre and Tirana in the first movie (assuming there will be more than one)?? This leads me to believe that they are not planning on more than one. Sadface.

That's my ramble for now.

four was my 2nd favorite behind the 1st one. I agree with most that it went downhill after four, but i still enjoyed the last book (not 4.5, haven't read that one) even though it didn't exactly give me the closure I was hoping for.

I liked four because you got to see how the world was in some more detail, not to mention the three gunslingers interacting. Rhea was a good villan, the love story was good. I guess really the book just gave Roland some depth.

I also loved the 'The Stand' cross overs, Flagg is my favorite reoccuring character so it's always nice to see him, and the part where they disarm the armed coffin hunters with two sling shots and a knife might be the best single part of the entire series outside of the first book, which is to me perfect from start to finish.

Seeing a scene like that brought to life by people who respected the material would be spectacular. It would immediately become a classic moment in film.

A truly great scene.

The first one is my favorite too, it's also one of my favorite books in general; the very introduction to the Dark Tower world is better than the actual world revealed and explored in the remaining novels.

However, I only like the original edition; that revised version ruins it pretty much like Star Wars OT special editions.

book 4 was my fav... the last 3 books were all POS

I think the series got progressively worse and less epic in scope after book four. Book one is still my favourite.

Funny, Wizard and Glass is not only my favorite in the DT series, it's also my favorite book of all time.

Thing with W&G, you either hate it or love it. Seems like mostly the people who read it when it originally came out dislike it.

I liked the 4th but it was where the series started to slow down for me. The second book is still my fave.

Book four really stood out for me in a positive way, loved every page of it. To me it added more depth to the character of Roland, and it was great to get a glimpse from Mid-World before 'it moved on'. Interesting to see that opinions vary so much on this one.

I'm stoked to see the on-screen adaptation, and particular how they handle the flashback part of the books.

I can not disagree more strongly. The flashbacks (Roland's youth-not Callahan's Wild New York Bender) are the best part of the whole damn thing, maybe aside from The Gunslinger viewed as it's own stand alone novel.

Once the main story got rolling again it sure never got very good again. Hey but that's just me, a lot of love for books 1-4 but only acceptance at best for 5-7.

Oh, and I really enjoyed Wind Through the Keyhole. But that reads best as the last book in my opinion. As just a little Dark Tower Fairy Tale.

I kind of agree with you. I'm at the point in my many readings of just skipping the whole Mejis story all together (though I do continue reading the rest of it obviously).

But at the same time, it does add a bit to Roland's backstory.

Wow, I never realized how polarizing Wizard and Glass was. My brother and I love that novel. While I consider The Drawing of the Three to be the best of the series, Wizard and Glass was an emotional rollercoaster of a novel! The confrontation with Blaine was brilliant, the flashbacks were instantly engaging with great characters, and Eldred Jonas is one of my favorite Stephen King villains. King delivers some of the most powerful pros of the DT series in Wizard and Glass.
