Idiot Daughter

She has to be the most naive kid ever. I had to stop watching half way on Netflix because she was annoying me so much, she just kept screaming, didn't even question her dad's line of work when his office is cleared without warning and he is 'erased.' Whats up with this theme in movies as well with people being afraid of someone who's killed in self defense as well. Most kids put in a life or death situation ain't going to just stand by and scream whilst her dad gets his ass beat, at least I wouldn't. In the car scene, the one where the cars totaled early on in the movie, she is sitting behind the attacker trying to kill them watching her father fight for the gun, why doesn't she just whale on the back of his head? Hate the way Hollywood portrays kids, there are exception of course, War Of The Worlds is another one that pissed me off.

Ha, I took a peak at the message boards to see if anyone else found her super annoying.

She spoiled the movie for me. The worse was when she runs away on her own, when it's clear there are highly dangerous people after them. Runs away from her dad, no other person in the world who wants her to be safe than him. And being totally capable against those threats. So off she runs to later get caught and used as leverage. When he trades himself for her, she doesn't even have the awareness her actions caused the situation where the trade was needed.

Other parts that annoyed me too:

- In the hospital, she has a hissy fit and storms off yelling and acting like a spoilt brat. Almost gets them both shot when her tantrum attracted attention of the assassin.

- When father is interrogating man in hotel room and he asks daughter to go outside. She lingers giving the man the distraction needed to get shot so his family can be looked after (in event of his death). The dad looked like he didn't want to resort to killing, just the threat of it to get the info he needed.

So it got me wondering if the movie could have been more enjoyable for me if they used an older actress to play the daughter (worked for Taken) or used an adult and do away with children in the film. She didn't bring a lot to the movie, but hey, I'm biased because she did annoy me haha.

"Useless daughter" seems to like it is becoming a stock Hollywood character.
What happened to "Chick's Rights?"

If you stopped the movie halfway through then you missed her actually become more tolerable and like a junior investigator. By the later part of the movie, I forgot about her griping over milk and cookies in the beginning. She adapted to the situations. Besides, what else do you expect a kid to do when people are shooting at her?

reply

Run if you can't take the gun of them, not just stand there and scream.

Because people in real life would be like a little soldier when they're getting shot at. Get some reality, and cut your typical masculinity attitude crap.

Maybe people at the Boston Marathon should just run instead of standing there and scream.

reply

Yeah because standing there screaming at the guy who is shooting at you is what everyone does when being shot at.

You're right, it's not what everyone does. Wrestling the gun off the killer isn't what everyone does either. Running away is also something not everyone does. Some people are frozen in fear and can't react; the ordeal they're going through seeming unreal to them. Some people are hysterical and lose their grip. And that's only talking adults. She was a 15 year old girl. Like in all situations, different people do different things.

If she had sat down to make a sandwich or attempted to walk over and hug her attacker, then you would be justified in calling her an idiot. I don't recall her doing anything of the sort though.

She saved his life in the hospital and questioned his line of work many times. It actually led to her running away at one point. It's cool if you found her annoying, I did at different points of the movie, but watching the rest of the movie would have invalidated your particular reasons.

And what is a stick figure 16 year old girl going to do if she "whales" on the back of a guy's head from the backseat? Slightly annoy him while he concentrates on the real fight?

reply

You can hurt him and his instincts are going to tell him to block, giving the dad a better opportunity to get the gun.

At the start of the movie I was actually surprised by the daughter's character because I expected another one of those bitchy kids who changes only when (and even then maybe not) they find out their dad is a secret agent.

Instead we had a pretty realistic portrayal of a kid newly moved to a foreign country without her mother and with her dad who wasn't around much. If fact the whole movie was so well written without the melodrama and over-the-top action. But most people can't see that and would prefer Taken type films over this. Heck I liked Taken too, but this one was more of a drama with action elements, whereas Taken was almost like Arnie's Commando - unbelievably unrealistic action but still enjoyable.

The dad was quite a jerk at the start of the movie, acting really stuck up and not even knowing his daughter had a nut allergy??!!

And what really struck me was the daughter actually called him Dad instead of Ben or a$$hole. All through the movie I was expecting her to do something really stupid - didn't happen. Kudos to the writers. And I guess you missed the part when she jumped on the back of the guy about to shoot her dad in the hospital, saving his life, and ended up getting shot in the arm. What would it take to satisfy you, the daughter stealing an Uzi from a guard, taking out the entire bad-guy squad single-handed, and carrying her beat-up dad into the sunset? Yeah, Taken 2 was absolute bollocks - most people liked that too...

If the biggest issue DrWalterBishop had with the movie was with the daughter, then he probably needs to finish high school and then learn what quality movies are like instead of bitching and moaning about it on an Imdb forum like all the twihards out there.

Probably the only thing wrong with the movie was with the Anna character, not sure if she got a bad script, was miscast or simply did a terrible job of acting, but Olga K really sucked in this.

The moment he walks in on an empty securityboot& empty office his CIA flags should've been raised ...

step 1) secure your most valuble asset (daughter)
step 2) find contractor& co-workers to reverse engineer the events.

Not take daughter on a dumb& dumber-search and get blindsided by an armed!! co-worker in a bank with spoiled brat.

whats up with the scriptwriters ... B.minus movie at best, I only missed Wesley Snipes, Dolph Ludgren or Eric Roberts to pop-up somewhere in the movie.
