Is Mr. Brainwash's Art Really That Bad?

You can't say that good art is based on the looks of the art. You can't say that good art is based on the methods of production. You can't say that good art is about originality. Andy Warhol had simple looking art that was based on previous artwork and that was produced in much the same way that Mr. Brainwash's art is. You can argue that Warhol was the originator of this type of production and is an icon because of it but you can also say that Mr. Brainwash's lack of fear to be unoriginal an mechanical is also pretty impressive.

He's very unoriginal. Everything he does is pretty much straight out of the Andy Warhol playbook.

Yes. Andy Warhol was that bad. MBW was ripping him off.

Yes it is bad and yes is was deliberately created to get the art world to buy rubbish.

Personally I love the fact that at the end of the movie they actually get "MBW" to do Madonna's new album cover. Madonna is now the height of not cool. I wonder how much money they extorted from her for that :-)

Yes it is bad and yes is was deliberately created to get the art world to buy rubbish.

I kind of liked some of his art too, but more in a kitschy way. I knew it sucked (or perhaps was meant to suck..), but whatever.

Hahaha, yes it's that bad.

But not all of it is completely, insanely terrible. My favorite pet theory is that Banksy comes up with many ideas as an artist, and over the years collected a file of "oh god, that's so terrible... but I bet someone would like it!" and dumped those ideas onto MBW's lap. Like the Campbell's Spray? Sorta cute, but too obvious to make it as high art.

No it isn't "that bad".

Try getting some of these self-appointed experts and esteemed judges of art to show you some good art and to tell you why it is so good. Have them explain why a painting of a Campbell's soup can by Warhol is worth millions while a giant sculpture of a Campbell's soup spray paint can by Mr. Brainwash is worthless crap. The only difference between Warhol and Banksy and Thierry and some bum on the street with a spray can is hype. There are a lot of talented artists in the world. But how much they are paid has nothing to do with talent. That is the point of the movie.

The art experts here who claim Warhol was so superior to Mr. Brainwash are exactly who Bansky is making fun of with this movie. Such people are so obsessed with demonstrating they are art experts they are willing to pay a fortune to prove it. And Banksy is perfectly willing to collect their money while simultaneously making them look like idiots.

This is what I didn't get. All of the "real" artists putting down MBW sounded pretentious. In the film MBW did very little art himself but paid a bunch of guys to do things for him. MBW was much more of a businessman than an artist (although, I agree, he may have presented himself as an artist).

What didn't you get? Lots of artists take on works on a scale too large to be completed by just one person. The "artist" is the one taking creative responsibility, the whole with intellectual control.

So Fairey is a non-artist as well because he was sued by AP over his reworking of the Obama image?

Well Fairey's reworking of the Hope image of Obama was original in the way it was presented MBW would of taken Fairey's idea and then replicated it with every single person imaginable... kinda of whats allready happened with the image.

He didn't creat any of that art, anyway. He shouldn't be making money off of all those designers and artists that he hired.

ifmachick, I totally agree.

Banksy has actual artistic talent, but Brainwash just seemed to have people do the work for him, now granted, he told them what to do. But if you can't create it with your own two hands, it's not really yours is it?

Bad? Yes
Terrible? No.
It is just too derivative of other artists work.
