Dummest idea for a movie ever

Nothing about this would work every under any circumstances. Maybe if they were giant oceangoing vessels like cruise ships, but not on land for so many reasons. I saw the trailer and had to laugh.

Well, it is based of a young adult novel, so you have to take the science-fantasy with a grain of salt. It's really no different than the Star Wars or MCU super hero fantasy nonsense.

reply

You can look at it that way, but to me Star Wars was a fantasy science fiction universe that seemed more believable or was easier to suspect my disbelief over ... or just plain get into, than this concept that just made zero sense at all. The physics and economics of it is even less believable than SW.

reply

The first three Star Wars films starting with A New Hope were okay and easy to suspend disbelief. The prequels and the JJ Abrams' sequels with his molestation and continued abuse of Science Fantasy tropes are really the core films I'd compare to Mortal Engines. I don't know if there's a term for it but I guess I'd call it "lazy Sci-Fi"

reply

There is a lot of lazy science fictions. though i like them probably among the best, i'd also put the first three star wars in that category too. It's cute science-fictiony, but fantasy for people without much brainpower or interesting in thinking.

reply

I put it to you that "The Purge" is a dumber idea.

reply

At least the Purge is physically possible.

reply

thats true - they are different aspects of dumb

but making a giant mobile city that will eat other cities does seem more "Rational" than The Purge , albeit impossible : )

reply

The amount of energy it would take to move a city would preclude its existence. Now ... when I think aircraft carrier ... that might work, but not something that has the haul ass over land.

reply

well , "mobile home" is a thing.
Get enough of them you've got mobile city.
likes you get at a music festival , or between stages of the Dakar rally

or...
The Jawas in Staw Wars.
Huuge tracked camper van for 1000s of people , roaming the desert , buying selling scrap machinery ...

reply

Yeah, and even small mobile home - DON'T MOVE.
Everything in fiction works great, even giant grasshoppers, which in real life would not scale to giant size. Whales can only grow so big because they have the support of the water around them.
