why bother with the bird storyline?

I didn't mind the movie and agree with all who say that Garrett was the best part of it but what really bugged me was the bird! LOL!!

That stupid little bird had a pretty big part in the movie and we were left without the scene where the bird either (1) dies or (2) flies triumphantly away.

I wonder if the little thing is still stuck in the box? :-)

Yeah, what the heck happened there? It was sweet and all, but I really didn't understand the point of it. Not that it had a HUGE part or anything, but that storyline took up screen time that could have been better used elsewhere.

Pretty sure the bird was a metaphor for their dead baby. Her husband was reluctant to trust her to take care of it, they focused on it when they had fights, and when he finally did trust her to care for it she ended up drunk in a bar instead.

Thank you. Her fixation on the little baby bird was due to her grief over the loss of their baby.

No,..Before the film was edited for content,..what they thought was useless,to slim down timeplay,Tim's chracter had a pet name for her.It was Dove,.hence the little bird. It reminded him of the past, and how it used to be with them.At least thats what i read on a couple of sites reviewing the film.Personally,I didnt think to needed to be left in,cos they took out the bits where McGraw called Paltrow Dove in the first place,..so why leave the bird in?

"If it's death from a Saxon sword that frightens you,..stay home"

The bird symbolized the baby they lost.

I totally agree. The minute I saw the bird I assumed one of those things would happen. If it died (or if it was given a bigger send off) that would be something of a really low point for her character.

And when she died in the end I assumed the bird would be let free by the husband. As if he were letting Kelly's spirit free. I really think we needed some closure. I was also surprised that we didn't get real closure with the husband either.

Yeah. I have to assume something was cut out cause I figured the bird would die and that would push Kelly off the edge or she lets go of the bird when she's all better but to introduce that storyline for it to go nowhere is just crap writing.

reply

I think it was to prove the point that she couldn't take care of another life because she couldn't even take care of herself...the day she is given responsibility of the bird is the day she completely relapses in the bar before her show

It made sense to me because I thought of it as a comparison to if she had had a child (she talks about how she wants to try to have another one since she lost the last one due to her behavior)...whether the bird is set free or dies really had nothing to do with it's purpose to prove Kelly's inability to show responsibility

That's just my opinion, hope it helps :)

Who was it that said "If you show a gun in the first act, it better go off by the third"?
Well, that bird was this movie's gun. They made such a big deal about the bird. Okay, I get it...it's her dead baby. Then they just drop it? They didn't even show her leaving the bird behind. It all happened off screen. That's called LOUSY WRITING.
This movie was cruel to that animal, and especially cruel to the audience!

Josebut8-

The bird is most certainly not her dead baby LOL. The bird is a heavy-handed metaphor for Kelly -- it has lost its way and needs to be nurtured in order to grow and fly away. I'm suprised it didn't fly free during the funeral (although a flock of black birds did in one brief shot).

I am free. But life is so cheap.

reply

So Kelly left her own soul behind in a dive bar?

reply

Yep, I get the whole metaphor of the bird being Kelly...and also, her child. I think it was a little heavy handed actually and bugged me anyway...like they're gonna carry that damned bird around feeding it every few hours and keeping it in a box while they're making Kelly's comeback tour. At the end of the movie though, I still said, "WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BIRD!?" lol.

I sure wish IMDB had a "like" button feature on its comments.

Really? I don't remember that at all....I must have been checking my texts or something. lol

I can't believe everyone missed that scene either.

It was only indicated that Kelly took a pill overdose. Actually Kelly tried to swallow the bird, but choked to death.

The tears we saw in the waiting room took place at a vets and McCraw was told the bird that he cared for and nurtered didnt survive, Kellys death was indicated with a funeral

reply

yes! putting that bird in the movie is like driving hours to the beach and not getting out of the car to actually go on the beach. or driving to a fancy restaurant and not going in to eat.

the story about the bird wasn't finished. frustrating.

reply

I just watched the original ending on the DVD extras, and Beau is driving away by himself, and the bird is in the seat next to him.

reply

Yep, I watched that original ending also. I truly liked the movie, but through watching the original ending and the deleted scenes, feel that poor editing hurt the film a bit.

I took it as the bird was Kelly. It was sick and injured and needed to be nursed back to health, like Kelly appeared throughout the entire story. She was sick, people tried to nurse her back but in the end, someone forgot about her, like how she forgot about the bird at the bar. In the end, the bird suffered because no one cared enough AKA Kelly suffered because no one cared enough to see her get better, by taking her out of rehab too soon and rushing into a tour too fast.

That's what I took for the bird story line.

beklah324, I think that's trhe finest and most comprehensive interpretation of the bird storyline I've seen. And it makes a lot of sense. Details like that should be noticed by those who are too fast to bash this film.
