The ending seems obvious, I don't see why nobody got it...

I thought it was quite obvious...

At the end, when both Rhondas meet, it proves the theory of desynchronization of both Earths, that they are not the same anymore since the 4 years earlier...

While Rhonda 1 gives John 1 her ticket, Rhonda 2 keeps hers, and then goes and meets herself in Earth 1 (for whatever reasons, curiosity to see herself, whatever), but I don't think there's any mystery here...

Just don't get all the fuss about the ending...

Explain why Rhonda 2 just appeared on Earth 1 in the fog instead of traveling there in a spaceship like John? There was something else going on in that scene...

My interpretation of the film is that both Earth 2 and Rhoda 2 are metaphorical. The significance of the appearance of a second Rhoda out of the fog is interesting. If, Rhoda 2 did really exist, then she would know how to find Rhoda 1, I suppose. The ending of the film has been much criticized. I have to agree, I don't see what purpose it achieves in the overall plot of the film. Perhaps, they put it in there to make the viewer think. Is it a sign that the accident did or didn't happen on Earth 2? Is it a sign, that Rhoda, in creating Earth 2 as an imaginary coping mechanism, has lost her mind? Any other ideas?

PS, This entire thread is hilarious, everyone is trying to come up with a plausible explanation of the events of the film. I'm not referring to you. Every theory for the literal interpretation of Earth 2, RHODA 2(NOT RHONDA) is easily punched full of holes. There are so many reasons why the existence of Earth 2 is practically impossible, I believe the metaphorical interpreation at least has to be considered.

By seeing her mirror-self, it suggests they she MAY or MAY NOT have had the accident.
However it raises the question that; She only won the competition because of her unique story. Which could not have been written, had she NOT had the accident.
We do know that Rhoda was fascinated with space since she was a young girl and probably would have entered the competition regardless.
But the chances of her winning WITHOUT the tragic back-story would have been virtually zero.
So in my humble opinion... The accident DID happen on Earth 2 as well.

This is what I think happened. The accident took place on both earth1 and earth2. On earth1 the family is killed and on earth2 the husband is killed. maybe because like a mirror things happen opposite so Rhoda2 hits the car at a different angle killing the husband.

For whatever reason she doesn't go to jail and continues on to M.I.T.

Back on earth1 Rhoda1 figures that out or strongly suspects it and gives her ticket to the husband to go in her place.

Back on Earth2 Rhoda gets picked on account of her scientific background and decides to go out of curiosity and maybe a sense of guilt for killing the husband and also like Rhoda1 she suspects the mirror theory and expects the husband to be alive. Maybe she wants the husband to go back with her re-uniting the family. Both Rhoda's wanted to re-unite the family.

Rhoda2 also expects to meet Rhoda1 and she was waiting for her.

They really need to make a sequel.

reply

If they made a sequel they can call it ANOTHER ANOTHER EARTH.

reply

JW how did they get to Earth 2? Not Space Shuttle? THey just appear outta thin air?

reply

I'm sure they had something like the space shuttle also.

reply

if both Earths sent groups of people to the other...even if different people got on board...what would be the chances that the spaceships would be sent along the same route and have a head on collision in space? :P

reply

Not sure if anyone has thrown this possibility out there. What if John 2 was the drunk driver who killed his own family.

...or maybe this is a Lost spin-off and John 2 is Ethan.

Best theory ive read

My theory was that two Rhodas ended up on Earth I and the two Rhondas never existed in the first place. That's all I can add to this amusing thread.

I've mentioned this in another thread, I would think it's John's return ticket rather than the alternative of her serving time & writing an essay etc.

I'm guessing that because of the lady on the television, it can be assumed that Earth 2 is very similar to Earth 1.

There is a theory that because of the emergence in the sky, the two Earths had different outcomes.

The only thing we can surmise is that Rhoda 2 did not give her ticket to John. She was brilliant before the accident but then had to go prison and ended up being a janitor. But Rhoda 2 looks pretty cleaned up. Maybe she killed John's family but never decided to go confront him at all. Maybe she went to Earth 1 to check up on her alternate self to see how another version of her would do things.

It could be very well that the only difference is that Rhoda 2 never hung out with John, and John is going to another Earth where his family is still dead.

There are many different mutations to the outcome, which is never shown, which I feel is rather brilliant for a low budget sci fi movie.
