How anyone would want to see Barbie instead of this is beyond me
Revoke their man card now
shareActually from I read they are counting on middle aged women as their main target audience, this is not exactly an action film.
Both Barbie and Oppenheimer are aimed at female audience. There are double features being sold, I think they are calling it 'Barbenheimer': https://variety.com/2023/film/news/barbie-oppenhemier-double-features-amc-theaters-1235665632/
Maybe you should consider a sex change and get yourself a 'Barbenheimer'.
No Oppenheimer reviews! I doubt two wifes of scientists makes it appeal to modern women!
shareA wife and a mistress, and the drama of it, I think that is the sort of things women are interested about.
sharePeople aren't going to see this for the drama about the mistress. They're going because it's about one of the most significant events in history that shaped the landscape of war as we know it
shareThe way you described it, it is an instant snoozefest.

Or you just don't have the attention span for complex stories
shareIf you are interested in history, reading wikipedia page of Oppenheimer would be enough, there is no need to watch a film about it.
We are living in information age, just how old are you?
I am 51, and I am not even that old.
And maybe some people want to see an adapatation of it done in a thriller style
shareYUP...WOMEN AND OLD MEN.
shareI'm an old man, so I'm probably target audience. Yeah, I do realize its better business to make movies for kids rather than old farts like me. Kids bring friends and whole families to cinema and they aren't as picky audience as long there's an overload of CGI and constant fighting going on.
Now, run along to watch your kiddie friendly movies, Kowalski.
Jean Tatlock was over 30 when she started seeing Oppenheimer, although Oppenheimer was 10 years older, that was not exactly a pretty young thing with an old man.
shareJust realised you were talking about OP.
shareOppenheimer was under heavy surveillance ever since his involvement of Manhattan project, that includes the night he spent with his mistress, government agents followed him from beginning to the end. With the documents of government inquiries into him unclassified, just about everything related to him was known.
Unless you are going into the conspiracy theories of the suicide of his mistress, there is no suspense.
If you don't know about him why watch a movie about him, if you knew then why bother to watch a movie? Historically speaking.
"If you are interested in history, reading wikipedia page of Oppenheimer would be enough, there is no need to watch a film about it."
You could also read wikipedia about Mozart, but I believe it wouldn't be quite the same experience than watching Milos Forman's movie Amadeus (1984). Artists have the ability to create views that cannot be found in Wikipedia articles.
To watch things like that I think you have to be a fan, and just have to jump on anything related to the subject.
I am not a fan of either.
Bio films are limited by historical facts, so unless it is about heavily romanticized historical figures, unless they have no respect for history, for example Mel Gibson's "Braveheart", they are usually not good films.
"To watch things like that I think you have to be a fan, and just have to jump on anything related to the subject."
That's a strange thought. I'm not a fan of Oppenheimer (or atomic bombs), I hardly know anything about him, but I'm curious of what Nolan has come up with the subject matter.
Then it is really about being a fan of the director.
The only work of Nolan impressed me was the batman trilogy, the rest of his movies were mostly weird. Tenet for me was the worst of it.
I would not go watching a movie just because he is the director.
LOL. I'm not a fan of Nolan. I think he is one of the most overrated directors. But he is still also one of the most interesting directors still active and working, which says a lot about current movie industry. I like primarily Memento, The Prestige and Batman Begins from him, rest of his movies are overrated.
shareThen I think you are probably just bored out of your mind, that is the only other reason I could think of.
I used to be like that when I was younger, watching movie was one of my main entertainments, I used to watch at least a movie a week, less selective than I am now.
Well, I'd like to think I'm selective in my choices. The latest movie I saw in theater was Joker in 2019. This year I'm interested only in three movies so far: Oppenheimer, Dune 2 and Ridley Scott's Napoleon.
shareI don't really get it. You don't like the director, not interested in the subject matter, but that is one of very few movies you just have to watch.
shareWhere did I say that I'm not interested in the subject? And yes, I don't think so highly of Nolan as some of his fans do, but even when he fails (Interstellar, for instance) he is more interesting director than most of hired hands spewing out current superhero crap.
shareWE ALREADY SAW IT...WITH PAUL NEWMAN & JOHN CUSACK...HARD PASS ON TAKE TWO.
shareI want to see both.
shareI would.
Barbie might end up sucking but it’s a comedy with a hot actress so it’s already better than a 3 hour movie starring a scrawny guy about people sitting around talking most of the time made by an overrated hack with no soul who’s never made a watchable movie.
And if you’d rather watch a movie starring a scrawny guy instead of one with a hot actress, I suspect you’ve never had a man card.
Greta Gerwig is a great director, but I'm not remotely interested in the material.
Nolan used to be a great director, and I'm mostly interested in seeing Oppenheimer to find out if he's actually made a decent film after almost a decade of dreck.
Yeah, Nolan deserved his place in the overrated directors ranking after Interstellar, but he has made a very decent period piece (The Prestige), so I'm hopeful Oppenheimer is return to the level he used to be. OTOH, he could very well ruin the movie by making it experimental, like Dunkirk and Tenet. Let's see how the word of mouth goes.
shareThe Prestige might be his best film, and I pretty much liked everything up until TDKR, which was quite disappointing. Not a fan of Interstellar at all, and Tenet is probably his worst film. Dunkirk was blah.
So yeah, I'm definitely curious if he's still capable of writing and directing a good script. I do admire his commitment to practical effects and analog film, regardless.
According to your tiny logic he's overrated because of Dunkirk and Tenet, I mean seriously are you for real?
shareI mean Interstellar was one of the overrated movies also, sorry if I was a bit unclear. Interstellar was the last straw for me. I wasn't very impressed with Inception or The Dark Knigh Rises either. Inception was an interesting movie for one viewing, but I had to struggle to watch it later for the second time. The Dark Knight is quite ok, but deserves no place in the top10 at the IMDb top250 ranking, so I think its overrated also. I like most Memento, The Prestige and Batman Begins from Nolan. But nevertheless, he is an interesting director and I'm willing to give him a chance, especially if the subject matter interests me, and in the case of Oppenheimer, it does.
shareOppenheimer looks miles ahead better than his last few films
sharePeople can see both. There's a double feature challenge called Barbenheimer.
shareHmmm....
3 hour long pretentious slog from a boring ass overrated director who's only hailed for his batman movies making a biopic about a jewish nerdy scientist looking like a tortured badass action hero?
OR...
A 90 minutes long colorful film made by an actually NOT overrated director?
Why the anti-semetisim?
shareNolan isn't jewish
shareThen why mention he's "Jewish". We all know what you really mean
sharebecause jewish nerdy scientist trope. imagine woody allen trying to play an action hero. or the scientist guy from the simpsons being portrayed as a damaged badass action hero. that's what nolan is trying to do with oppenheimer.
shareAs a woman, I guess you can have it back (didn't even know I had a man card - have I been missing out on discounts?). I don't understand anyone who could look their nose down at a film that seems to be a lot of campy fun and proceed to insult anyone who likes to have a good time watching films they aren't man enough if they wanna watch it. Like, Captain America wasn't for me, but I'm happy for anyone who had a good time while viewing it, you can keep your woman card (again, am I missing out on discounts with these sex-based cards?).
