Just give it a chance. It’s a Halloween film and it happens to be far and away the most finely-crafted Halloween since the 1978 classic. Blows any of the past sequels & reboots out of the water from a filmmaking standpoint. Moreover, Michael here is perhaps the most menacing and ruthless he’s ever been on screen; it isn’t like Zombie’s version who tried way too hard. Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie likewise shines more than she’s ever had in the role. Her performance is gripping. Carpenter’s score? Goosebumps-inducing. Not only was this score hands down the best Halloween score since Carpenter’s own classic, but it is 100% pure Carpenter. A handful of his classic film scores came to mind while viewing this film, particularly at the end. Need to buy that sucker now!

That said, let’s say you do end up being underwhelmed like many of the snobbish old foggies and maybe a few young whipper snappers... um, I mean genuine and open minded fans of the franchise/original film... this film is nevertheless worth seeing, especially at this time of year. Sure, those numerous banal “I was disappointed”, “not impressed”, “older sequels were better” posts will have you thinking that the film is all hype. Though bear in mind, there are those unwilling to give it a fair chance and yet continue to trash it. Others were expecting to hate it and... did hate it. But you know what, see it anyway!

A Halloween film this well-executed and intense should at least keep you engaged. I mean it’s a violent, mostly straightforward slasher film but it contains legitimately good performances, direction, some suspense and actual depth. Can you really expect to be THAT disappointed when the film has more merit to it than the majority of Halloween films, let alone most slasher flicks? If you are, then... ok. As for myself, it goes without saying that I was satisfied. So much so, in fact, I had a good cigar afterwards... and I don’t even smoke! XD While the film may not be as minimalistic and atmospheric as its predecessor - its first act isn’t as good as the rest - it’s a sequel that feels current, yet more true to the original than anything else. Happy Halloween.

I like your reply! Glad someone still thinks it through!

I enjoyed it.

Though, it was definitely a different sort of movie to the first one. A lot more action, and a lot more killing. The first one goes more for the slow-burn approach. Very little in terms of plot happens, but there's an atmosphere to it.

Probably why it divided fans.

I really enjoyed it and it was a great sequel. They ignored all the other sequels after the first film too. It was gory, suspenseful, tense and horrifying in some parts. He really is an evil bastard. :-)

For me this is the order of preference:

Halloween 1978
Halloween 2018
H20

The rest I don't care to remember. :-)

Disappointed.

Really disappointed. I preferred part 4 and 6, and both of the RZ films, to this. By far.
