Wait, this wasn't filmed in Kentucky?

That's a bit of a disappointment. I figured it would have the "authenticity". Oh well, I still love this show.

reply

I've heard it was less expensive shooting where they did. Whethers it myth or truth, but KY supposedly is rough on taxation when it comes to filming, so any long term commitment of filming like a TV series would be hard pressed to deal with the extra expense if true.

I know Pennsylvania (where the pilot was filmed) is pretty reasonable for filming. That's why they film a lot of stuff here. I would've even though that about Kentucky, though.

reply

That's what I've heard, not sure how much actual truth is in it. I heard a lot about how expensive it got when they were filming Elizabethtown, in KY. I do know close to the town they were filming gas was around .20 higher per gallon while they filmed.

The pilot was filmed in P.A.? I'm from PA and I didn't know that. I don't live there now but interesting. I can see where Pennsylvania would have the kind of setting they were looking for.

reply

Didn't surprise me to find that out. Those hills were obviously Californian, not Appalachian.

I have only watched a couple of episodes and have noticed that a lot of it is filmed in California. I have never been to Kentucky but would have loved to see this show filmed there. Oh well, I really like the show so far. Great acting and the locations they pick are good ones. If there are particular scenes or episodes that were shot in KY it would be great if someone could point those out.

reply

They did do KY shoutouts.
KY Ale beer (had a tshirt and signs on convenient/gas stations)
A soft drink/soda pop ALE8-1 made in KY (Raylan drinks one and there are posters at a couple of stores)
Theres a scene where Raylan and Winona are riding together heading to work, (during the arc where she stole the money) the scenery passing by was actual scenery you'd see driving to downtown Lexington.

its especially obvious in the episode called 'kin' when they go to the mountains...i'm familiar with flora and fauna of eastern kentucky and california and the pine trees look nothing alike...neither do the mountain roads...the ones in eastern kentucky have sharper turns and switchbacks usually following mountain streams with dense under storage and deciduous trees...

Filmed in and around my hometown of Valencia, CA. I use to see stuff all the time in episodes, so they clearly filmed a ton of stuff here all the time. Never saw it happening though. We have a studio lot here where they film a lot of shows like NCIS. Looks nothing like Kentucky though, I can tell you that.

reply

Speaking of NCIS, my husband and I notice mountains in the background quite often on that show. We've been to DC and Northern Virginia, where much of the NCIS action takes place, and there are no mountains there!

It would have cost a fortune to film in Kentucky. It was filmed within the "Thirty-Mile Zone" (where TMZ got its name). Look that up to understand why it's advantageous to shoot there. These sets have dozens and dozens of professional people on them working behind the scenes on every aspect, including filming, building sets, stunts and costume/hair/makeup, and they are not instantly replaceable by Kentucky locals. The studios usually have to use professionals and actors who are in the unions. The studio would have had to pay to fly out and house all these people for months at a time, not to mention the actors themselves. Plus they wouldn't have been able to get such a strong cast if they filmed on location - someone like Timothy Olyphant with young kids is not going to want to be separated from his family for five months a year.

A lot of shows shoot in Vancouver, Toronto, Atlanta or North Carolina, but they have plenty of industry people in each place. Kentucky doesn't. Almost everything else is New York or LA. Lost is the only show I can think of off the top of my head that was shot in a unique location, but obviously they legitimately needed to be on a tropical island.

Living in Kentucky, I was always disappointed in that. I did think that it was funny when they would show skyscrapers in Frankfort or crack/meth dealers in Versailles. Versailles is a very rich area with mostly horse farms.

There were shots that they would use during the first season between commercial breaks. I pick out one shot of a draw bridge that is on the Ohio in Louisville.

They also did a great job of paying homage to things you see in Kentucky, like bourbons. My favorite one was when one of the marshals fashioned a bomb out of a bottle of Ale8One. You don't Ale8One in many places but Kentucky.

Frankfurt skyscrappers is good.
Versailes is "preppy" but almost all the small counties/cities around Lexington have some meth issues.

When I read about the filming in California, and the cost of Kentucky, I wondered why they didn't just go to West Virginia, Tennessee, or Ohio. They could have kept the natural scenery, and actually been in the thick of the mining towns they were portraying.
It's cool though. I really have no complaints about the show. Might be one of the only shows I've ever watched that I can say that about. I even loved the ending. And man, did they ever hit the nail on the head with Mags' family in season two? I remember calling my friend just before the season ended, and telling him how perfect everything looked, and how much it made me appreciate my heritage.

Signed, Me.
