Is hating a movie b/c the protagonists are bad guys a thing now?

I find that surprising when you consider how many classic movies and tv shows are centered on characters who are unrepentant sh*tburgers. 3 of the most critically acclaimed and beloved tv shows in recent memory center on a murderous meth dealer, a serial killer, and a mob boss. Or look through IMDB T250... movies about mobsters, killers, more mobsters, more serial killers, thieves, racists -- aka beacons of morality.

If a big part of you not liking this movie is b/c the main casts are bad people, then there's a really good chance that you're just a hypocrite.

The Block boys have a code of honour mate. They don't rob you if you live in their block. About hating a movie blah blah blah, nah mate it's just something you made up to be a dick about something.

Well put; though I'd say it's more likely racism or classism at best.

Liked the film, liked the characters (except Dennis and the two little kids)

The movie did it's job well, we were supposed to dislike the kids at first then grow to like them as the film progressed, like their characters grew.

What i do hate though is that all the people who say they didn't like the characters immediately get called racist. Like what the *beep*? Maybe they just didn't like the characters.
People need to get a *beep* grip.

That's not the reason. It's because there's a lot of Brown people and some can't/won't see the humanity in them no matter what. People don't hate Goodfellas. A lot of people loved Wolf of Wall Street.

It's ok to like more than one actor. :))

How the hell are the main characters bad guys? They are portrayed as poor kids from broken homes (very sympathetically), who kill an alien that attacks them (understandable), develop as people (well, Moses at least), and eventually save the world (which is not a common "bad guy" thing to do).

In fact, the worst thing I remember them doing is mugging a woman, whom they later return stolen items to, and save from aliens (multiple times).

I would be pretty hesitant to even call them anti-heroes, but if you really believe that these kids were "bad guy" protagonists, watch Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Taxi Driver, etc.

Um... I don't know... because the first thing they did in the film was gang up and rob a defenseless woman?

I've seen things that would make you want to write a book on how to puke.

reply

IMO saving that same woman's life, and then saving the entire planet from aliens outweighs the mugging.

Besides, they're not exactly rich kids robbing people for the hell of it...

I believe a lot of the negative remarks are based on the race of the characters.
We first meet them mugging a young white woman and for so many of the posters that's it for them, no redemption. The woman wasn't physically harmed but clearly terrified, but that's in the first 5 minutes. From there we see their close friendship with each other willing to back up Moses even when he's threatened with a gun. In the end Moses shows real bravery leading the monsters away to destroy them All this is ignored by many posters because of the mugging.

Others have given examples of characters doing terrible deeds but still being cheered on such as Dexter, Sopranos and breaking bad. If they had been black forget it.

I remember seeing posts on a movie forum I take part in. The were discussing Django when it fist came out and poster after poster were complaining about the white woman being shot, saying it didn't sit well with them. This movie depicted so much cruelty, from the scars on Django's back from the lash, men being forced to beat each other to death, a man torn to pieces by dogs, men and women wearing punishment collars etc. Yet they were disturbed seeing a white woman shot.

I've just been reading posts on the "This is England 90" thread. (There is a lot more depth to these characters so just giving bare bones)In the original movie a black character called "Milky" is almost beaten to death by a racist character "Combo". The subsequent series brings Milky and Combo back. Combo has changed and remorseful for what he has done. Milky is understandably still angry. Combo is killed, the majority of posters are angry with Milky, despite the fact Milky was little more than a boy when beaten almost to death by the adult thug Combo. He is forgiven by these posters, he is allowed redemption. I suspect if the character races were reversed the opinion on this board would be different.

This is correct. From that point on only their death would satisfy me, and I will never apologize for that.

reply

No way! People love morally gray people. I'm shocked that this movie isn't rated higher. Just saw it; great stuff. Walter White did way more *beep* than the kids in Attack the Block. These kids also paid a high price for acting on impulse. That's the point. The film goes after everyone, the kids acting like gangsters, and the system that doesn't care enough about them.

reply

I couldn't agree more. I just find it silly that so many people are raging on the characters in this movie because they weren't kids next door types. To me that they were archetype characters helped drive the plot towards redemption of their motives and personality. The ultimate irony of all this is, John Boyega is now a mega star in the Star Wars universe. How's that for karma.

Sadly, yes. The ongoing infantilizing and effeminizing of Western culture, continues apace.

How are the British accents in this film? I'd like to see it, but I don't know if my girlfriend will be able to understand the dialogue (she has a very tough time with British accents of the non-posh variety).

reply

They're using real accents more along the lines of the show Misfits and not that fake posh crap. The only posh one is that girl they originally robbed and even she isn't overboard like the garbage they show in America.

And it's clear anyone who hates the protagonists is only doing so because of their skin. I've seen much worse blonde haired blue eyed protagonists praised. In fact most people love Wolverine, Brad Pitt played Satan(and people loved it), etc.

We even have so called Americans who hate our president because of his skin so it really doesn't surprise me that this adult babies would lose their bowels over a movie.

So if you like the movie you're socially conscious, if you dislike it you're a racist.

I thought it was ok - can you show me on the linegraph where I stand? I'm new to judging absolutely everything by skin colour because I don't care about these things in the slightest.
