This movie is so bad... also a question for those that LOVE this movie.

Um.. where to start?
Typical high school, 'Twilight' type of movie (I think the Twilight series is horrible too). It is really predictable and cheesy. A good looking guy (John Smith or Number 4) enters school, gets bullied by the football team, then falls in love with the girl that dated the star/leader of the team. The ex-boyfriend gets jealous and tries to win back the girl. Of course he fails, the new guy and the girl hit it off and have a relationship BUT something happens and can't be together for some reason in the end. Haven't we seen this type of scenario one too many times before?? Yet I guess it still works for all these idiots. Furthermore, the aliens look like a complete joke and the special effects are poor.

One part of the movie was just mind-boggling to me.. when the aliens were drawing near John (while knowing this) and is also being chased by the cops, John and Sarah go off to school to develop pictures!!! WTF, seriously?!? You're running away from these 2 groups and you're going to make a pit stop at school to develop pictures?? Can someone give me an explanation to this?

Overall, terrible movie. I wouldn't even rent this with a free rental coupon.

Reason: No one can give me a reasonable explanation to the above question.

Sarah's "safe place" is the dark room. It's the only place she can think of in a pinch to go and clear her head. They develop the pictures because she needs to understand more about what is happening before she can get all worked up about it...it's pretty unbelievable, aliens and being hunted and all. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy any part of the movie. My advice would be just to not go and see movies that are based on young adult books or are centered around young adults since the formula really always has been the same and always will be. I have a question for you, name a movie made in the 21st century that is COMPLETELY original and unpredictable. Sadly, there's just not much room for pure creation anymore, just enjoy the unique takes on classic situations and stop taking films so seriously. It's about entertainment.

I enjoyed the film. It was nothing special but it was competently made and entertaining. I really liked the characters of Henri and Sam as well. The dog was cool too and Dianna Agron is really beautiful. Nice cinematography, locations, and score as well.

An original movie in the 21st century? American History X, Fight Club, Donnie Darko, Seven (later copied by Saw but it was original at the time), The Game, The Matrix, Inception. Come on, movies can be original and surprising.

reply

Those movies are not original.

Fight Club is based off a book, therefore not original.

They were many stories about serial killers before Se7en, and while it is one of my favorite movies it is still not original.

Inception is just another heist movie, has nearly the same plot as Oceans Eleven, granted it may be in a new setting for the type of movie but that does not make it original.

Both the Matrix and Donnie Darko got at least some inspiration from Alice in Wonderland and they both openly admit it.

The Matrix pretty much a standard chosen one story, they even call Neo the one, new special effects and camera tricks does not make the story original, it makes the special effects original.

American History X was about a man realizing his evil ways were wrong or basically the same story as A Christmas Carol.

Just because a movie is really good does not make it original, it just makes it really good.

My "I am Number 4" Checklist:

1) Simple Plot? Check.
2) Some plot holes or weak scripting? Check.
3) Generic teen stereotypes? Check.
4) Fun movie I've watched 4 times already? Absolutely. I don't care what anyone says: I liked this movie. A lot. It was pretty corny, but sometimes that can be just what you need....

Thanks, and yes the movie is a piece of crap.

I'm pretty old now and I quite enjoyed this movie. Probably 'cos I didn't realise that it was meant to be a teen movie. I've never seen any Twilights, Buffys or that sort of stuff but the action and the fx in this made it watch-able. Peace 0ut.

Ca' canny now.

Statements such as,
"I'm merely putting in my two cents like everyone else and also asking a question for idiots like you that love and defend this film.."
and
"So if you're a ignorant moron who doesn't know a film from your left foot, definitely watch this movie!"

are so far from opinions, it's laughable. You are presenting your opinion as a universal truth, and proving your intelligence as you do. I watch movies to enjoy a short escape from reality, I approach each movie with fresh eyes and an open mind. I specifically try to not compare a movie to every one I've ever seen. I feel bad for you since you can't do that. It must be awful to never enjoy a movie, because as has been said, there are very few original stories being made into movies. For the "movie snobs" may I suggest, http://xkcd.com/915/ , this comic sums up my feelings about you very well.

you watch the movie on a B&W tv? special effects were cool as hell in 1080p, and Twilight?? really? are you a male or female? not being rude, really asking. you need a seditive man, or two.

This movie sucks, almost as bad as The Marine. This movie is entirely made up of cliches.

It was very cliche yes, but I still enjoyed it. I thought the effects were great! I thought the aliens were convincing enough too, a change from these dudes - http://images.defensetech.org/images/alien.jpg

You're right about them developing the pictures though, who would do that in a situation like that? That was ridiculous
