It was foolish to think that success in 2008 would mean success in 2023

He was 66 then, which was really pushing it, but still young enough for audiences to give him a go.

It did $790 million.

That's a billion + today when adjusted for inflation!

I can picture them drooling over that and green lighting this movie.

But...Harrison Ford is 80 now. EIGHT-ZERO.

Secondly, the last movie, despite it's good box office, had mixed reviews, with audiences generally being lukewarm or even DISLIKING it.

It's only at 53% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

So Ford's age, plus a so-so response from fans last time, would make me jittery about writing a $300 million check on the hope that it can basically a billion dollar.

Plus, the Skull is a far better movie. It respects the main protagonist, has a decent villain. Better actors. A charming frenemy character played by the brilliant Ray Winstone, etc. More things going for it than this mess.

Oh man so funny to read post's like these like you know wtf are you talking about hahhaha

Give us a hint wtf YOU are talking about...

All that I stated is factually true. Studios look at past results, bankability of lead actors and current circumstances before signing off. It's meant to be a calculated risk, with a favorable probability of success.

Keep going lol, hahaha so funny

damn, we found the butthurt indy fan. Literally everything the OP stated is an unbiased fact. How old do you think Ford is?

reply

Not a bad opening WW. This might even break even. Or close. This is not for me but it did better than expected.

This is what happens when you have Mangled in the director's chair.

The hype was there as well, the trailers actually looked really good for Skull and it didn't have much competition at all that summer. Iron Man had been out for nearly a month by the time Skull released in late May and The Dark Knight wasn't out until July.

Dial of Destiny is coming out in a summer where Spider-Verse is still doing well at the box office and Mission: Impossible is out very soon, it's definitely got less hype (due to factors you mentioned like the mixed reception of Crystal Skull and Ford being eighty now) and more competition.

Dial of Destiny's underwhelming box office feels like a combination of four things:

-Premiering it at Cannes was a mistake as the mediocre word of mouth killed a lot of the marketing momentum and has made people less inclined to check it out.

-The Indiana Jones films' core audience skews older and there's been nothing in terms of the franchise's (small) recent presence or the concept of Dial of Destiny to get younger people in big numbers to come and see it.

-Its the kind of film that feels too late to make now. Indy 4 should have realistically been something that came out in the mid 90s while Ford was relatively younger, and then something like Dial of Destiny in 2008 to properly give the character a send off. His current age is something that turns off many potential audience members, and there's not been enough reviews/word of mouth that the film effectively turns his older status into a dramatic strength like Stallone did with Rocky Balboa.

-Reshoots and other factors have ballooned the budget so much that its ensured that the film actually making a profit would be tricky even if the three previous elements weren't there.

Indy 5 as a movie in 2023 just has too much of an uphill climb to really do big numbers.

Bingo.

They should have made the movie I woulda made where Indy goes on one last adventure with his two sons, Short Round and Mutt. That woulda made a billion bux. Woulda been like Step Brothers with voodoo and tomb raiding.
