It was foolish to think that success in 2008 would mean success in 2023

He was 66 then, which was really pushing it, but still young enough for audiences to give him a go.

It did $790 million.

That's a billion + today when adjusted for inflation!

I can picture them drooling over that and green lighting this movie.

But...Harrison Ford is 80 now. EIGHT-ZERO.

Secondly, the last movie, despite it's good box office, had mixed reviews, with audiences generally being lukewarm or even DISLIKING it.

It's only at 53% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

So Ford's age, plus a so-so response from fans last time, would make me jittery about writing a $300 million check on the hope that it can basically a billion dollar.

"So Ford's age"

What about Ford's age? Go watch the movie you fuck head. Ford played an old retired man in the movie.

I think Spielberg and Lucas not returning hurt the box office too. Had Speilberg been director, I think there would've been way more hype. But I remember when he left, a lot of people started asking what the point of this movie even was anymore. I agree. Mangold is a good director but IJ is the child of Spielberg and Lucas.

It has nothing to do with Fords age. So just STFU. Also Ford was 78/79 not 80 during filming. It has everything to do with the fact that Indiana Jones Is not as relevant as he used to be. The franchises fan base is much older. In their late 40's or older OR dead. People in their 30's and younger only want huge special effects films or streaming. THATS IT. Sure there are a few films still getting people to go out. Last year's Maverick and I guess Guardians of the Galaxy and that stupid Mario movie. But Guardians did not do as good as previous installments and Mario had a much smaller budget. The movie landscaping is changing. Soon theaters will be like Drive ins. Few and far between. This is why Tom Cruise is running around trying to drum up business. The industry knows they are in trouble. Much of it by their own hand. Putting a big budget film on your streaming platform a few weeks after release doesn't help. Some people would just rather wait and watch in the comfort of their homes.

Oh And while the film is probably never going to be universally loved. Audience scores seem to be better than the 53% you quoted.

Crystal Skull was a terrible film. It was beyond goofy.

I think that we're so used to aged action heroes that when I watched Crystal Skull for the first time since seeing it in the theater, a 66-year-old Indiana Jones didn't seem as silly as it did in 2008. Also, Crystal Skull didn't seem as bad as I thought it was in 2008, but movie quality has declined sharply.

Who can $Bn?

reply

This movie won't do as well as Crystal Skull at the box office because covid is still lurking around and its just too dangerous to go into a theater today
