?? The queen had mind control and telepathy powers? What? She could do stuff to the people that were in her army but she didn't demonstrate any ability to control non-harnessed humans. Telepathy powers could simply be a communication device, and we don't know what powers she had beyond her own subjects/creatures.
You know of all the things that was cheezy about the sequence with the queen the one thing I didn't see coming was Tom attacking himself with the weapon to kill the queen and all of her connected flock. I thought that was pretty well done. For whatever budget they did have there was a lot of CGI in the episode on the Queen... sure some more down to earth stuff (tech wise) in the tunnel to the Lincoln Memorial... but the Queen part looked cool and all the glowing alien pods and stuff looked good. Having her hoards explode like fireworks was nice as well.
Was it contrived? Gosh yes. But it was still entertaining and it served as a conclusion to the entire show. It did a much better job than any other world wide event based show like this managed to do. Revolution ended with a very short mini digital comic book series because it got cancelled... and that was pretty generic, very rushed, and contrived. Many other shows never even made it that far such as The Event, Flashforward, & V which just ended. So I applaud them for at least finishing the show and putting enough money in it to make an alien that seemed like it could be the one in control.
Granted, the queen was not as primal as maybe people expected.. but the queen was a conqueror that assimilated some of the tech and biological properties of those her armies took down. So in the end for her to be kind of weak and over confident was fitting. She had reason to be that confident against a single human without a gun, knife or explosive. Those were the weapons of humans, not the super alien glow stick of doom that was made once and unknown to her. It was tech far beyond the capabilities of humans and even their known alies the Volm. Volm had more technology based stuff, not the biological weapons and stuff.
Anyway, how would the queen have known what was possible with the glow stick? There's no way she would have known what it was. She wasn't able to read Tom's mind or control him as he wasn't wearing a harness. So, as contrived as it was ... I didn't find it that reaching for a plot device. We all knew it would end with the humans somehow pulling it off... they tied up the story with a nice bow and even let us see a little of the rebuilding after the fact. It was good to invest in another one of these world wide catastrophy type shows and actually get a conclusion ... and one that even makes sense.
