What's the target audience here?

The standard plot seems to follow the 12 year old audience line of many of the mindless super-hero movies the e.g. the later Avengers movies but then the movie is R rated featuring almost porn grade sex & nudity & I think above average violence. So yeah I guess all the kids are downloading this on the net but who's paying for it?

Oogway, nearly all demographic categories at IMDb rate Deadpool 7.9 or higher.

People of all kinds have clearly enjoyed this movie. Don't be a dick.

Requires a brain and other movie/cultural referencing ability to fully enjoy

If you want to know the target audience it is easy to find - Ryan Reynolds has said repeatedly who the film was created for - all of the Deadpool fans who hated what XMen Origins Wolverine did to the character. Which, speaking as someone who is right in the middle of that target audience, they did a very good job of meeting. I'd also say, judging by responses and comments across this board, they also did a good job of hitting the target audience that all films today have. Narrow minded people looking for something they don't like to then use as an excuse to put down everyone who doesn't think, act and/or live the way they do.

I'd say teenage boys.

But, there was a lot of 90s jokes in this movie that only people in their late 20s-30s would get.

Love of the condescending douche bags on here with their passive aggressive comments. Claiming it's a film only 12-year olds or those with a mind of a 12-year old could enjoy.

The consensus seems to be that the target audience is comprised of fans of the comic book character Deadpool, whether through X-Men, X-Force, X-Factor, Weapon X or whatever.

Yes, sadly but perhaps for good reason, social commentary (or whatever doesn't constitute "mindless") is absent from many comic book superhero flicks. I mean, very few of these stories are on the level of the works of Shakespeare, Hugo, Shelly, Dickens, Austin, Twain, Emerson, Orwell, Tolkien and Dick (and so many, many others), which have been rehashed repeatedly. Technically this movie does have some social commentary.

I think Japanese love this kind of stuff. That's a bit of a tongue-in-cheek statement, I confess. Perhaps (or obviously) the movie is meant to be a cult flick, but there are plenty who would buy it and might find it to be at least an okay picture.
