Granger

What is up with his speech lately? I can only describe it as like dentures slipping or mouth surgery. He did not sound like that in the past.

reply

Haven't noticed any difference.

He's always sounded like that to me (kind of mush mouth); I think that's just his delivery style--it's like his words get stuck in his throat. Also, his voice is pretty deep, so that may make him sound more "mushy." But I'm okay with it; it's his style, and I don't have a problem understanding him.

I've heard a change in his speech this season, too. It almost sounds like he's had some kind of mild stroke that causes him to slur his words more.

I looked into it on the message boards specific to him. Others were questioning health issues as well. Loss of weight. They noticed a difference in speech; suspected possible stroke. I've watched the guy over the years. There is definitely more slurring. (Aside from his unique delivery ?) I love him as an actor. Hope it's not a serious health issue.

Agree. People started mentioning this in S6. It comes and goes. I just read an article asking the question if MF suffered a stroke.

I do hope he is okay though.

reply

He just suddenly seems so "old". Last season, he still had his "swagger" and appeared to be much stronger. Now he looks like he's 20 years older than he really is.

Like the rest of you, I hope he's okay. I've liked him since his "Crossing Jordan" days.

He filmed Twin Peaks before starting on NCIS: LA this season, so another poster mentioned he just might be tired from too much work--which is not a bad thing for him. It's nice to be wanted when you're an actor! ☺

reply

Miguel Ferrer I think had a mild stroke or something--he is showing all the signs of it

reply

Unfortunately the "mush mouth" doesn't come with a stroke. Inarticulate speech yes, but not his slurring which seems to come from further down his throat.

reply

Stroke was the first thing that came to my mind. I'm not a doctor but was in med. school for a while and both my parents were physicians. If you watch his face in close-ups while he is acting, you may notice a slight paralysis to one side of his face (left?), including his mouth. A slight stroke would explain this, but it would be irresponsible to diagnose such a condition merely from watching him on television. He still has a terrific deep baritone voice that I would love to have (as an actor and voice-over guy). And he reminds me so much of his dad (I'm sure he would hate that, but it's true, and I hope he's proud of that). It's a joy every time he comes on set. I love the dry humour the writers have given him, and which he delivers to perfection.

I was starting to wonder why no one else noticed when I found this thread. I do know someone that had a stroke that was left with that "marbles in your mouth" sound. Bells Palsy with only a little drooping or drooping that had resolved also crossed my mind as a possibility. As with everyone else, I hope it is something minor. Since it doesn't seem to be in the news, either he wants to keep it private or we are just imagining it....

reply

I was going to say the same thing, At 53 minutes into the 11/20/16 episode it sounded as if he was drunk or he had some kind of operation on his tongue.

The most important thing is sincerity. If you can fake that you've got it made.

A few months ago I read that he did suffer a stroke, apparently this isn't his first, and its a type of stroke that is hereditary and that either his father or uncle had them as well. He bounced back to filming just a few months after the stroke and it seems to me that there hasn't been a great deal of improvement at least from episode to episode. Hopefully Miguel Ferrer does make a full recovery.

reply

Do you have a source for this?

reply

I'm curious too. Something is definitely wrong with him.

I literally could not understand him in tonights episode.

reply

There has been mention of him having a stroke prior to the recording of this current season, I believe they are working towards writing him off as a result. If you recall a few episodes back there was a scene towards the beginning where you see Granger having an MRI, then later in the episode there was a conversion between him and Hetty where it was mentioned he had some tests done and they didn't look promising. If you add this with the uncharacteristic personal bonding he has displayed this season (most notably with Beil and Deeks), it gives off the "close to death" need for atonement vibe.

If I'm right, which I hope I'm not, then his acting days may be coming close to an end and NCIS LA is setting up contingency plans just in case.
