The best sci-fi movie of the millennium

In the last 15 years one sci-fi movie stands out, Cloud Atlas. It's simply brilliant, this generations 2001 a space odyssey. When i read the book i never thought it could be made into a movie, then i heard the Wachowskis were going to make it, i thought to myself they'll never be able to pull it off. Boy was i wrong, they did the impossible.

So where does it rank on the all time list?

2001 a space odyssey
A clockwork Orange
Dr Strangelove
The Matrix
Cloud Atlas
Terminator
Alien
Aliens
Predator
Jurassic Park
Brazil
Gravity
Looper
Eternal Sunshine
Source Code
Judgement Day

Wait, so no Eraserhead or Bladerunner?

Not so sure about this one. Looper?

Never did like Bladerunner, Eraserhead i simply forgot. It's supposed to be on 11th place :)
And Looper is one of the best sci-fi movies of the decade. Go watch it!

Can I take it you never yet saw Children Of Men? :)

It does stand out. It was a wonderful surprise for me, because with the Matrix sequels I had lost confidence on the brothers (well, siblings). Most movies nowadays you watch them and after a while, maybe a day or two, or even hours, you forget them.

This one stays and you think about it, both for the ideas, but also for the world it created, the visuals. And I'm not talking about effects, I don't care about that, it's the aesthetics, I don't know how to describe it, I hope I make sense.

As for its place in the millennium, for me it goes after Eternal Sunshine and Her. Serenity comes next, which, if you don't know, follows the Firefly series, and if you haven't watched either, I highly recommend them.

I see we both love Kubrick movies, that's my top 3 too. :)

Ironically, really only a third of the movie can honestly be classified as Sci-Fi in genre (Somni and Zachry). But I guess you might argue the entire film is best classified as Sci-Fi if you argue the whole connectiveness between the stories (birthmarks and such).

That makes no sense at all. Beacause a movie isn't set in the future that makes it less of a sci-fi? I think you need go find a dictionary and read the definition of sci-fi.

reply

I'm not saying that.

I'm saying that the Zachry and Somni stories clearly qualify as Sci Fi. (Zachry's is perhaps technically more post-apocalyptic, but with the space travel element and the technological innovations of the Prescients, it brings it into the sci-fi universe.)

On the other hand, Ewing's piece is a historical drama, Frobisher's story is a period piece romance, Luisa Ray is a crime thriller, and Cavendish is a British style comedic farce. There's nothing that really pops out in any of those stories as being particularly sci-fi on their face.

So four of the six pieces are firmly rooted in genres other than sci-fi.

Still, if you look at the movie as a whole, and argue the intergenerational connections between the stories, I suppose you can make the claim there's a sci-fi label for the entire story.

But I would argue that the movie defies any one genre as a whole. Which is part of what makes it so great.

I don't think it is the best. The film can get a little messy due to its scale.

It is a personal guilty pleasure of mine though.

reply

I would have to include Dark City on my list as well

reply

For me it's perfect :)

reply

Perfect? So why do I keep falling asleep before the first hour is up?

reply

Beacause taste differs from person to person.

reply

People fall asleep because they can not follow something whether it's this film or another. I go to films with friends all the time and sometimes I see them fall asleep. They weren't able to keep up, got bored and fell asleep.

Don't blame a great film because you can't follow it.

The film is perfect.

upvote for your answer.

Interesting to see that there's no foreign language films in your list though; isn't there room for 'Stalker'?

reply

Ehhh... I think you need to get a dictionary pal.
