I was a bit surprised that the film as a whole, as well as its two main actors, Idris Elba and Abraham Attah, were snubbed in this year's Oscar nominations.
Attah in particular gave one of the most powerful and searing performances of 2015. This is a major Oscar fail.
I wonder if the controversy over the Netflix's distribution deal played a role.
The Academy is super old school. I think it will be a good couple years before movies put out directly online + theaters at the same time garners the respect it deserves.
I agree. This is the biggest snub of all movies. The lead and the commanda. The whole movie is great. Schindler's list of this era.
It may be an online movie and it could have something to do with it, but then again the academy has been nominating films that only go to select theaters with limited release since the beginning. It seems like just a straight forward snub...oscars it should have got nominated for: actor, supporting actor, picture, and director.
I felt the same way, with the same movie comparison! I was pretty blown away by this, at all levels. This is a massive snub by the Oscars. Though I really liked Concussion and felt a nom was deserved, this goes beyond nom, this would have won it.
***So I've seen 4 movies/wk in theatre for a 1/4 century, call me crazy?**
yeah, i don't think it's as much about #oscarssowhite as it is an online-only film, which is still regarded as inferior by the academy. the fact that amazon and netflix have both produced some very high quality television series in the last few years should be testament enough.
"Schindler's list of this era." Wow, wow... wow... slow down there, you're exaggerating a little right there. Beasts of no Nation certainly is a good and unique movie, the acting was indeed top notch.
But Schindler's List? Spielberg's film is movie-history, one of the greatest of all times on so many levels, one can not rate it below 9 - and I usually rate rather strictly. And no, I do not praise that movie higher "because holocaust", this would be silly.
In all honesty I may have over stepped it, yes, but not because Beasts was not in the Oscar race, but because if it is not like Schindler's List in this era then no movie will be. Hotel Rwanda? Meh. The Pianist? Well, now that is going a little further back.
The movie (Beasts) as a whole is flawed and not as epic as the Holocaust film (List), but the two performances that weren't nominated are something to be pissed about because they were so so good.
Another thing: Spielberg is my favorite director, but do we still all remember Schindler's List the way we did when we first saw it? I'm not so sure. People mention classics like Apocalypse Now and Goodfellas and the Godfather, but not List.
I think we may both be exaggerating on that film a bit.

I just saw it again, 2 times, on Amazon a few weeks ago. And yes, it absolutely is still as great, touching, shocking, disturbing, heart warming and thought provoking.

I don't think Schindler's List is all that good, honestly. It's pretty messy. It tries to cover so many things that it just came off as sloppy imo. I prefer "The Last Train" and "The Pianist" among many others in that genre.
I do think this movie is great though, just like "Sometimes in April", which Idris Elba also starred in.
That's not the reason at all. Netflix Movies do not get Oscar nominations ,TV movies Online movies. Do not get Oscar nominations. Its not always about racism.
In my opinion this is film of the year. But what is not a matter of opinion is the fact that this film is just as good as the films nominated for Best Picture and better than a couple of them.
Honestly I think the fact that it was on Netflix just gave the Academy a reason to snub a film they'd want to snub and not give shine regardless. I mean after all... a film with an all Black cast with two incredible lead performances but no white hero in sight?

Yup. It was both reasons. But they dug Amy Adams, Ruffalo, Keaton...so many bla performances out of their a** right? Let them have the Oscars. It's been a joke for years with a few exceptions.
It's ok to like more than one actor. :))

Those two were horribly snubbed, I'm actually surprised someone like Bryan Craston got a nod, but whatever. What doesn't make sense to me is that two Netflix documentaries were nominated for best documentary, and they didn't even play in theaters! Beasts of No Nation did (albeit in limited release, but still).
I wouldn't call this a "snub", there's something purposeful in the word "snub". The Academy has long standing rules on how films qualify for Oscar contention, and part of those rules includes a theatrical run in Los Angeles. If, because of the Netflix distribution deal, it did not have this qualifying rule, it cannot be considered for the Oscars.
