"the Emperor died?" "that's what they say"
I see what Disney is doing. They're going to try to build up a myth in new stories set after Return of the Jedi, like a Voldemort/Sauron "Is he really gone thing?" I bet we'll hear similar lines in future series. That way, it's out there more, so that down the road, new audiences who are first discovering Star Wars (and have no one older and wiser to guide them), it won't feel so forced when the Emperor is randomly alive in Episode IX. It'll feel more organic, they won't question it. Because who knows what order they'll watch in. Because eventually, there will be a new generation of viewers who won't know the franchise's history as well, so the difference between the George Lucas Era v the Disney Era won't be as noticed.
