I laughed from start to finish. Am I a moron?

My top five movies:

1) Brazil
2) The Godfather
3) Dr. Strangelove
4) The Big Lebowski
5) Glengarry Glen Ross

I consider myself a serious film buff and like to think my standards are high; I watch lots of art films, indie films, old classics, and do not think Citizen Kane is overrated etc. I'm no historian, but I'm a cinema addict through and through.p

One joy I find from movies is the endless variety of feelings they induce; meloncholy, exhilaration, dread, inspiration, anger, empathy... the medium is capable of so much and I appreciate any film that succeeds at making me feel what it means to.

One of the feelings I savor in films is mindless laughter. I cherish movies like Dumb and Dumber, Super Troopers, and Billy Madison. However, I'm also a snob in this genre; I hate Freddy Got Fingered, Sorority Boys, any recent Sandler movie etc. For me, the ones that work, work because they're so proudly absurd that I laugh at the fact that I'm expected to laugh in the first place. The ones that don't seem to assume the worst about their audience, and come off as lazy/insulting.

Maybe it was because I had about six beers before I saw it, but I found Movie 43 hilarious; a terrible film in so many ways it barely qualifies as a film. Yet my gut reaction was uncontrollable laughter. I can't entirely blame the booze, since alcohol couldn't save the Hangover series and other movies I found
insufferable.

This might be the most anyone has written in the defense of Movie 43, but I'm not so much defending the quality as I am challenging the hostility I've noticed towards people who found it funny. Movie 43 is a turd, and any repeated viewings on my part will likely be on account of YouTube clips. But I laughed at at least 60% of the skits I remember. My question is... is humor really so subjective that a serious film lover like myself could actually find it funny, or does my gut reaction automatically make me a moron?

Of course you're not a moron, but I don't understand how your sense of humour works.

reply

I liked it too. Some haters feel it's their duty to bad mouth it when they've probably not even seen the thing.

reply

I have seen it... just a few minutes ago. Movie 43 was GREAT if you are 14 or younger. Beyond that, it is only funny to those who will never grow up. About 40 years ago, there were 2 movies like this POS. They also featured skits with a man selling products that come from from Uranus (your anus) and a talking upside down balls and penis. I can't remember the titles of the films, but they were mildly humorous. Movie 43 just shows that the state of humor today has regressed toward the toilet.

reply

Or you've killed off your inner child by behaving like a snob for too long.

reply

One was most likely "Kentucky Fried Movie".

The one with the upside down balls and penis was "The Groove Tube". I could never forget that scene. The difference between that and Movie 43 is one of sutlety. The scene in the Groove Tube was a PSA for venereal disease, and the "puppet" started out far away, and one couldn't make out what it was. The closer it got, the more people in the audience figured out what it was, and started laughing hysterically.

I was a teen back then, and found those 2 funny. I'd like to revisit them and see if my opinion has changed.

I saw this Movie 43, and I agree. It's pretty stupid in my opinion. They stretched out the Hugh Jackman scene WAY too long! I can't remember any of the other scenes.

Of course not a moron, but many people here will say otherwise. Because it didn't appeal to THEIR sense of humor, everyone else is inferior.

To be honest, I felt a lot of the humor of the movie was more intelligent than most movies out there. The problem is, majority of views appear to not have understood that. The best example of that, and one of the funniest bits for me, was the iBabe. But ultimately the movie was a lot more clever than it appears at first glance.

In other words, everyone else is inferior.

I completely agree. With the exception of the leprechaun story which I found boring, I found every skit pretty hilarious. The best was the homeschool one. My GOD.

Hail to the king, baby.

reply

This movie wasn't funny, just stupid.

reply

Really?!
The chin-balls bit wasn't even a little funny?

reply

If you think the movie was stupid maybe you didnt see the small jokes and the whole reason behind the stupidity.

reply

Freddy got Fingered is like 500x funnier than Movie 43.

Yes, you are. You should be in a very bad, moody day to laugh that hard on this garbage.

But you're not a moron in the sense of being stupid or lacking any intelligence considering your movie standarts are clearly very high. You're a moron to admit publically that you like garbage. Man, sometimes I dig garbage too, it's not a sin, I don't act like I can rewatch Citizen Kane or Chinatown a thousand times and never get tired of it, I love these and other great masterpieces as well as anybody with good taste, but sometimes it's good to watch some low to no quality production, it's kinda fun in a weird way, plus, watching garbage is good sometimes to keep us solid and sharp about the good things, it teaches us what to avoid.

But if you loved something that's garbage, like this movie, that's ok too. But you don't need to act like a moron and say it out loud like if it was something positive. As I said, I dig garbage sometimes, I don't know, out of logic, I can't explain, probably for nostalgic reasons, or probably because there's something there that fell on my taste, my B side, "B" for bullcrap, mind you. But I don't keep shouting this out loud for people like if it's something good, I keep it to myself.

I don't say to people around that I sometimes enjoy watching Highlander 2 in the dark... ops... now... where's my neuralyzer?

Anyway, the simple fact that you, a guy with high standarts keep talking around that you enjoyed Movie 43 like something positive can make the good comedies like Airplane, Spaceballs, The Naked Gun, Ted, to stay in the dark. Don't put Movie 43 in the same level as these good comedies, for the love of God! Did you enjoy it? OK, keep it to yourself and acknowledge that you like garbage, as I said it's not a sin.

Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Weep, and you weep alone.

reply

Not to be rude, but your argument makes zero sense. Basically, your argument comes down to "It's OK to like a bad movie, but if you say that out loud your a moron." Also, no one said anything about Airplane, Spaceballs, etc. or that they're inferior to Movie 43.

You also mention good taste as if it's a stable concept. "Taste" is not a real thing. Who determines taste? Is it just one guy being like "ayy that's pretty good that movie is good taste". Or is it just something regarded as good by the general public. *beep* movies can be liked by a lot of people. Look at how much money the Transformers movies make. Is it what film critics think are good, because 60% of those guys are pretentious a-holes that most of the time shine a negative light on the movie because of one element they dislike like the director or something like that, therefore going into the movie expecting it to be bad and if it's actually not that bad they'll still have a mindset to say it's bad.

Last thing, the writer of the original post states multiple times that Movie 43 is trash, and you act like he never even hinted at it.

You know what would make this lemonade better? Bleach. Excessive amounts of bleach.

If you're a moron so am I.

P.S. No. We're not morons.

If it matters, I have a wide range of cinematic interests and tend to not like most "fluff" movies, but I was rather shocked at the hostility aimed at Movie43 to the point where I just don't bother to engage people on it. I'm a fan of Airplane, Amazon Women on the Moon, etc.; yes, Movie 43 typically does focus on the cheapest angles of thrill (sex, defecation, etc), but I laughed at much of it as well as the inappropriateness of some of the scenes. A few I found vapid, but ones like Homeschooled, Veronica, Speed Dating, and the Truth/Dare segment I thought were really funny. It depended on the quality of the writing. Even the scatalogical one was amusing to me because the language and acting so much paralleled a woman wanting to give her virginity to her bf -- and the poor guy was so bewildered.

No, it's not "high art" of any kind, but I don't think it deserved to be a Razzie of the Year -- there were far worse movies that came out that actually pretended to be more than they were and failed miserably and were nowhere near as enjoyable.

Yeah, the Kate Winslet segment was one of those I was, "OMG, really?" but it was directed and acted well enough at the same time that I was laughing throughout. Unbelievable.

Still think my favorite is Homeschooled. Bad parents. Very very bad parents. DOH. But yes, high school also really felt like that, which is what made it so funny.
