They abandoned a perfectly good capsized boat!

SPOILERS!

I just couldn't take this movie seriously after they abandoned the boat. It didn't appear to be sinking, and they didn't discuss it to much length. A scene where they establish that all the food and rations are ruined or gone and that there is no safety gear in the boat would have made the abandonment of the boat more believable to me, but as it stands, they just swam out into the middle of the ocean as if that were the better option.

Anyone who has spent much time on the water knows that it is virtually impossible to keep your bearings without a compass or a landmark. There was scene after scene of the 4 people treading water, turning around, looking underwater, and then continuing on in some specific direction as if they were following a trail. They would have been so lost and way off course. An amusing ending would have been if the survivors found the the sailboat, still floating, instead of the island!

i hope nobody is ever trappd at sea with you buddy!!!, abandoning the boat was a an obvious thing to do, even if the currant wasnt very strong, they still country just stay on the boat indefinitely, when your in that situation, and panic is surging through you, you want to just get out of there quickly, and get to safety,...staying on that boat and "hoping" for rescue is stupid if theirs an island near you that you can swim too,....calling this movie stupid because they abandoned the boat is completely retarded,....keep your movie opinions to yourself if their not going to be drivin by logic and intelligence,

Btw for everyone talking about "well obviously they did leave the boat its based on true events"......you need to stop believing everything you see/read.

The attack it was based on was that of (survivor) Ray Boundy in 1983. The shark attacked his 2 crewmembers - while they were clinging to the debris (as the boat had sunk). And it wasnt a great white as in the film, it was a tiger shark. Ray was the sole survivor with Linda and Dennis dying.

But at the end of the day, I dont think anyone watches shark films for the plots. We watch it for the terror that we can relate to. Imagining ourselves in the middle of the ocean with nothing for miles and no way to tell what is underneath/around us. Anything could come at you from any direction and you have nowhere to run/swim to.

70% of the earth is sea. The other 30% is land. It can often be hard to find someone even in the 30%, imagine how hard it would be to find them in the 70%? That means that automatically any chance of land is better odds for survival. On land there is also chance of shelter, food, drinkable water. Out in the open sea, it wouldnt take long for dehydration to kick in with no way to shield yourself from the suns rays. Add in that the boat was sinking......they definitely had better odds for survival by making a swim for it. However usually you can see for miles out on the water. So have to think to myself, exactly how small was this turtle island :S

The one thing I would have done differently, would have been to take as much gear from the boat with me, as possible. I'm sure they had a knife on board, I would have taken that. Perhaps some more things to use as weapons. If there was any food or drinking water, then that should have been taken along. Ideally, I would have considered building a raft, but I'm not sure if they had suitable material for that.

Think about it this way. The man that stayed on the boat, along with the boat, were never to be found. Whereas the girl that made it to the island was found the next day by fishermen (based on a true story). People have used the sun/stars for countless years to find their way

I believe warren was killed by the shark to, i reckon the boat sunk in the end and the shark was waiting then after he is killed it found the others, hence no trace of the boat or warren

The boat was sinking and there was a shark circling it. The boat sunk and Warren was probably attacked by the shark or maybe even drowned. Whatever both were never found.
