I know there are people on here that are hellbent on destroying this movie, but I would like an honest opinion. Is this movie as bad as the IMDb ratings suggest or it at least halfway as decent as the RTs reviews suggest? I would like to know if it is theater quality or if I should just wait to rent.
I saw the movie yesterday and I enjoyed it a lot. It's silly - it is Ghostbusters after all, and it's by no means the best movie ever made, but it's really fun and done quite well. I'm an 80s kid so I grew up with Ghostbusters. I feel like this is a great addition to the franchise, I'll pay to see it again, and I'll buy it on DVD for my daughter to watch when she's older.
The rating is so low because of the people who haven't seen the movie, but have been campaigning on here to keep the ratings artificially low by voting 1/10 on multiple accounts.
I saw the film today and thought it was pretty bad.
There were some parts I did laugh at....
Towards the end of the film the ghostbusters are trying to find Rowan (the bad guy) in a building after he decides to leave Kevin's (Chris Hemsworth) body. McKinnon's Holtzmann says "come out, come out wherever you are". I though that was funny because that's what Glenda the good witch said when trying to call out the munchkins in the Wizard of Oz. I also laughed when she was dancing to the Debarge song and acting goofy.
Wiig and McCarthy weren't funny....
Leslie Jones was better than what I thought she would be.
The movie itself was very lackluster at best. The music score was horrible. Nothing compared to Elmer Bernstein's score from the original film.
I am one of those that reserved judgement until I saw it. I like Paul Feig, Kirsten Wiig, and McKinnon. However...the movie is unfortunately quite terrible. I wanted to like it so bad but I honestly think there are a couple reasons why it failed.
1. The humor just wasn't that funny. Everybody felt so rehearsed and held back. This may be because some of the better work of these actresses and director is seen in a more r rated fashion. Thus, they have to resort to fart jokes and rehearsed lines that aren't in their comfort zone.
2. The acting was just subpar. I liked McKinnon, but even she felt like she was trying too hard for her character. She was the only one that was relatively funny. McCarthy was a huge no show (pun intended). Although I'm biased when it comes to her as I've never thought she was that funny. As mentioned in a critical review, the character dynamic between Wiig and McCarthy was pretty bland. No emotional connection there whatsoever.
3. The story (I wince at saying it, because there wasn't one). Yes it's a Ghostbusters movie so I get that there isn't supposed to be a complex story but seriously it felt like they created 3 pages of a script and then said, "Okay girls, this is the general outline, now have at it". Sometimes that can work perhaps but in this case, any adlibs or funny lines that were supposed to happen on the spot weren't there.
4. The editing was extremely rushed and it felt like they tried to go places or build a scene to have a punch line but then they would just cut to the next and it leaves you thinking, "That's it?" I especially think SPOILERS that the whole dance thing being in the credits was a sign that they may have had something else in mind that whole time with all the soldiers and people standing still. In the actual movie it became pointless and an unused scene that could have been interesting.
All in all, this movie is pales in comparison to the original 2 movies and I can't help but think this was a huge money grab. Ultimately it just feels uninspired. The director, writers, and all the actresses are not at the top of their game unfortunately.
I held judgement until I watched it. To me, it was just OK. If this is all they can do for a remake, why bother? The Original was just so much better and much more funny. Throwing in Cameos just didn't help anything.
Being a MoviePass subscriber I see a lot of movies. Some turn into real surprises both good and bad. So of course I went and watched this. At this point for anyone that hasn't watched it, wait for it to come out on home video. Watch it then if you must. Better yet, watch the Original.
The special effects are decent, the characters are fun but the plot is not properly elucidated.
Graphically this seems a definite step up from "Ghost Busters" in 1984, with more detail and a feeling of depth. The ghost design is deliberately hackneyed but I believe this serves as part of a sketchy parody of the subject of the film, parapsychology. Everything seems expertly lit and not all shabby.
The characters are fun portrayals of enthusiasts who are devoted to their subject as well as the kind of friendship dynamics they have. It's nice see the lead actors apply their skills to depicting these experts who finally get to validate their beliefs and empirical activities more completely. In addition, all of this is done to serve as a parody of both the original film and as a gentle ironic depiction of the characters themselves.
The one criticism I would have is that the plot doesn't make complete sense in terms of how people and events are tied in the logic of the storyline. Who is the bad guy and when did he decide to start his campaign of vengeance? How exactly were they able to stop him - that wasn't completely clear to me either.
