For the record, I'm an American with a football/basketball/baseball and golf background. My oldest son is a soccer player and we are enjoying watching this World Cup.

Even with no real rooting interest, I find the penalty shootouts to be nervewracking. I just watched the Croatia-Brazil match (and what a match it was). I'm amazed at how good the Croatian shooters were and how good their goalie was (and against Japan also). I also thought Morocco was impressive in their victory over Spain.

I believe hockey (NHL) also does something similar with their shootouts.

It's an interesting way to end a match. One good kick--or one bad kick--can end your chances right then and there. It sure is interesting to watch!

Same with me. I’m American but rooting for France. But these last few games of penalty kicks are very nerve racking and heart wrenching too. You can see one team really dominate and yet be scoreless and it comes down to a duel between the goalkeeper and the kicker. And I feel so bad for the last one who either doesn’t make the goal or doesn’t prevent the goal. I feel the same for the field goal guy in American football too. When it rests on one person with millions watching …. I will say that I love the World Cup more than I have loved anything in sports.

Some of the Penalty takers this year have been disgraceful,

Every pen the odds are stacked with the kicker i'd say 80/20 but these players (Spain typified this) Are casually steepping up 1 or two steps and trying to roll the ball in cooly and the are making it a 50-50 fight- and losing.

This is a recent trend and they should be savaged by teammates/Coach and fans because it's such a cocky and disrespectful way to take a pen and it's not even that effective

I noticed it first with game with Poland and their only goal. Don’t know enough about it so I thought it was a strategy they used. Is it recent?

Lucia2016, you definitely know soccer better than I do. It's interesting to me as a "casual fan/watcher" to see the different approaches on the penalty kicks. Watching Croatia's shooters was so impressive...they looked so comfortable in that situation.

I'm sure it's something the players practice...but it does seem like it's 50/50 anymore.

Exactly Croatia is an example of how it should be done

Countries hopes on your shoulders no faffing around just head down and blast into the corners if the goaly chances a dive and saves at least you did it right

But this new style looks mentally weak in my eyes and indecisive they are just giving away there advantage and if you cost your country hitting such a meak effort in an languid way you should be ashamed

No you didn't do it right at all as you didn't score, there is no right and wrong way to take a penalty. If it is saved then no matter how you took it then you didn't do it right. Once again you are pushing opinion as fact.

And I can't be bothered to reply to the other post you put but you are wrong in that it its a recent trend. Gary Linekar in the 90's used to slowly chip it down the middle. Yakubu literally walked 2 steps and rolled it in.

Your whole arguement is based off a couple of world cup games. Just stop. PLease for the love of god just stop.

There is definitely a right way to take a pen, hard and into the corner if GK guesses right then unlucky, but walking to the ball and hitting a daisy cutter is cuntish and if you don't agree then it's because you are a Cunt

Then that by your own defintion is the wrong way to take a penalty as it was saved. So i refer you back to the beginning. There is no right and wrong way. There is scoring and not scoring, it is irrelevant how the penalty is scored.

Find me examples of consistant pens being taken in this fashion from 5 years plus ago and not fucking Gary Lineker lol yes it was first ried in the 70s with Paneka but it was very rarely used- i will be able to find you a dozen taken within the last few months and let me tell you, most were missed

It's a fanny way to take a pen and you are asking for trouble but i am sure you have some survay or stat from somewhere to prove me wrong

Why not just call it as you see it and have your own opinion rather than leaning on Data or things you have read

So ignore actual stats and go by some rando on the web. Are you for real. Stats don't lie. YOu do quite often but stats don't lie. You seem to have an issue with the truth. Why is that, oh thats right you don't like being wrong.

It's not just the short run up it is the waiting untill the very last moment to hit slow rolled in shots which if the keeper guesses right saves with ease

If a shot is hit with power right into the corner even if the keeper guesses right there is a low chance he can save it

I can't believe we are having this argument

Very true, letess...I really can't think of anything else in sports (other than the NHL shootouts) that really compare to it. There's so much pressure on these players.

By the way, this Argentina-Netherlands match is a doozy as well, isn't it?

Could not believe they didn't have Neymar take the first kick to reduce the pressure on his teammates. He normally takes the kicks on a team that includes Messi and Mbappe and is probably the best penalty taker in the world.

Jes' Sayin', I was surprised by that as well. He made it look so easy in his penalty kick last game. He didn't even get a chance to kick today.

Again, so true. My son and I were discussing who had the tougher loss today, Brazil or The Netherlands. That's a tough call...I tend to think Brazil did, because U think they beat themselves as much as Croatia beat them, but both losses were agonizing.

As a casual fan, though, I was thoroughly entertained by both matches today. I'm drained...and I don't even have a rooting interest (my son is a big Messi fan, though).
