Smith clearly made this "serious" role to win back respect

Movies are being in development for years. This movie was already shot before the Slap.

Its just that Will Smith wanted awards. And playing slaves usually brings black actors awards. So here he was. He didnt know that he would get that Oscar for Serena Williams movie. It could have gone anywhere and be ignored. But playing slaves is a win-win scenario for black actors who want awards.

Principal photography was expected to begin on May 3, 2021, in Los Angeles. It was later set to begin on June 21, 2021, in Georgia, but on April 12, it was announced that the film would be shot elsewhere due to the recently-enacted Election Integrity Act of 2021. " The location move was reported to have cost approximately $15 million. Filming was announced to take place in New Orleans from July 12 to August 21, 2021. On August 2, filming paused for five days as a result of several positive COVID-19 tests. Additional casting for the film was announced in November and December.

In May 2022, the film's release was delayed to a possible 2023 date, with the given reasons being numerous production delays, the controversy over Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards, and an overcrowded film release schedule from Apple. It was subsequently moved to its December 2022 date".

The Academy is basically for blacks only now. They will likely be on their knees, begging for forgiveness, and coming to accept that violence is now a part of the Oscars. Just like how American cities that are run by blacks have had to come to accept that their cities are now overrun by violence.
