S2E9: One of the worst episodes in ST history

Excruciatingly painful to watch. I will say Chong and Gooding have exceptional voices, but I could care less when I'm watching Star Trek. Major thumbs down to the fool who came up with this idea.

reply

Nearly as painful as seeing people type "I could care less"

reply

This is the correct response.

reply

Actually, it would be "I could not care less," indicating that you could not care any less than you do right now. #JustSaying 😊

reply

It's actually "I couldN'T care less". Why do you Americans always get this expression wrong and not realise that it doesn't make sense when it's wrong??

reply

I started but once the singing started I immediately turned it off. Hard pass on musical episodes. It’s bloody Star Trek not friggin Frozen.

reply

And it was Buffy, Xena, the Flash. Musical episodes, if done well, can give you insights into the characters and we saw some great ones here. Una and Laan, Laan and Kirk, Uhura and Spock, Spock and Chapel, Pike and Batel.

The episode gave a reason for the singing (yes, a Star Trek technobabble explanation, but its not even the 500th example of that.)

We also got a couple of good continuity references. Chapel getting the fellowship from Korby, who we know will eventually get engaged to him. And we got the reference to Carol Markus, who we learned is pregnant which know will lead to the birth of David Marcus, Jim Kirk's son who will die on the Genesis Planet.

A good drama will have a wide range of tones. Star Trek has always given us those. Dramas and action adventures (too many to mention), comedies (the Naked Time, Charades, Those Old Scientists), and tragedy (Under the Cloak of War, In the Pale Moonlight.)

My wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed this episode. And she doesn't like musicals.

Keep defending this trash and that's what you'll keep getting served. It was awful.

reply

You can certainly disagree with me. Everyone's taste is different.

I check a lot of sources, and many thought it was great. (to be precise, among the one's I usually check, nearly all thought it was great.) I'm sure you have other sources who think the opposite.

I base my statement on the quality of the music (medium to high), consistency with Star Trek physics (high), the progress of the character development (very high), application of the usual rules of a musical composition (high).

What worked in other shows doesn't work here imo. The tone of Buffy suited itself well to a musical episode as it was always quite self aware and tongue in cheek anyway, Star Trek has never been taken that far before though, not the live action stuff at least. Each to their own, I won't bash you personally for enjoying it.

reply

You might not, but I'll happily call him a person lacking good taste for enjoying it.

reply

Taste is subjective. I've got no problem with music or musicals, just keep it out of Star Trek.

reply

Agreed.

Costumer, Prime Star Trek of 1966-2001 NEVER EVER had any "musical" episodes. Sure, there was lots of diverse music played by both human and alien instruments, and Voyager's Doctor may have indulged in his opera several times, but there was never an episode where the whole cast sang along to some ditty or whatever, not that I've ever known, and I must've seen all those episodes many times.

reply

And that is relevant how exactly? That something has never been done before does not preclude it being done. Refusal to stretch and try new things leads a series to becoming bland. Before Buffy did "Once More with Feeling" it hadn't been done before. To my knowledge (which is not guaranteed accurate) no horror series had had one before.

As I have said, there is nothing wrong if you didn't enjoy it. I did, as did my wife. A large group of people I know and many review sites also praise it. I'm sure many of your sources do not.

I've noticed that many do not like SNW in general. Many claim it widely violates canon. Ignoring the point that most fiction that runs for years tends to adjust canon as needed, I don't know of any violations. Yes, I know many think T'Pring and Spock should not be interacting, but the nature of their relationship prior to "Amok Time" can be interpreted in many ways.

ST history ended in 2005, this is now the era of Kurtzman Scum Drek.

reply

Amen! Yeah, the first episodes in Season One of this show just seemed so inert to me, they just had no life to them. It sounds like things have gone way downhill since then.

reply

Agreed wholeheartedly.

The first season was exceptional but sadly this season they manage to do the worst episode idea in Trek history with the most idiotic techno-babble to date even the animated series was not this silly.
