the urgency at the end

why did it feel so rushed?? why does Emma RUN to pack?? and her maid seems to understand this and RUSH to help as well??

i loved the relationship between them and thought it was very tender and loving...

i just didn't get why it was so... URGENT...

it almost felt that discovering her love as a revolution was like a social and political uprising or upheaval... it happens so fast...

but i would still like to hear your thoughts on this as i'm puzzled...

reply

Emma is overwhelmed by grief and guilt and cannot any longer be with her family after her betrayal, which she feels caused Edoardo's death. She is unable to place her feelings in perspective and cannot continue to lie to herself or anyone else. She feels all she has left is Antonio who has awakened in her a primal passion she has not experienced before and she needs to run to him.

She purges herself of her old life leaving behind her jewelry, clothes, all the the comfort and elegance of her upper class lifestyle but the most painful act is to abandon her family and she has to do it instantly without a moment to reflect on what she is doing, how her betrayal is hurting them and how the pain that consumes her is driving her mad. Hence her urgent departure and inability to even say goodbye to her son and daughter. She abandons all rationality to surrender to the primal lust she shares with Antonio.

easy,
WOW, you are some hot ticket. That is just a perfect articulate heartfelt and intellectually grounded explanation of this whole work. I wish you lived next door and I could explore your thoughts on other films that mesmerized me- The Music of Chance, Barton Fink, Leolo... With your level of perception and expression, I hope you are a teacher/writer so many more can benefit.
thanks so much.

There was no homosexuality with the two guys - just good friends

I have the Italian DVD now, with an hour of interviews with the director and 5 actors. Tilton Swinton's is in English (of course) but she does not say anything about it and I'd have to look up the Italian word for "gay" to hear if any of the others ("Antonio" not being among them) say something about it.
But the implications that they were more than friends are overwhelming.

reply

Damn. You just made me understand/like this movie a little more.

I still didn't like it a whole lot, but now I understand and appreciate the characters and their motivations a lot more.

Did you ever see Julie Christie in Darling? She's the unhappy wife of an Italian count and in a very famous scene, she walks through her empty mansion peeling off her clothes as she goes. At the end of the scene, she is nude. It's a very similar scene in feeling as the scene we're discussing here.

reply

Nicely explained...so why does she stand infront of Betta for 5 minutes?!

reply

I've removed my earlier interpretation, because it was clear after my second viewing that Emma went in the FRONT entrance. Thus my (already wobbly) interpretation lost its foundation completely.

Does any one have an explanation for Eva's reaction at the end? She is pregnant, correct? But why the urgency in getting everyone's attention, as she clenches her stomach?

reply

I didn't get that either. Anyone care to elaborate?

So in conclusion, I hope you realise you're reading my signature.

From carolineparworth;

"Does any one have an explanation for Eva's reaction at the end? She is pregnant, correct?"

I think so.

"But why the urgency in getting everyone's attention, as she clenches her stomach?"

To me the director is showing us Betta's reaction to her mother leaving. Betta is encouraging through facial gestures but not openly. She wants to remain in the family and not be thrown out. Why? Well, to me it's because we see Betta look at Eva (the purpose of that shot) and Betta wants to be supportive of her dead brother's fiance who is pregnant.

it's just in my humble opinion - imho -

reply

Still, I can't help but feel that Eva's urgency is completely unnatural and uncalled-for. But thanks for explaining.

So in conclusion, I hope you realise you're reading my signature.

reply

The other thing I would add about Eva is that she may be concerned about a possible miscarriage. So, that could explain why under the great stress the family is in, why she is touching her stomach to check if she is alright.

Thanks for the reply, BB ;-)

Indeed, Eva is pregnant (Edo points it out at the party, when the investors arrive) and is quite possibly miscarrying. This would mean the end of the line for the Recchis, at least until Gianluca (the younger, materialistic son) begets am heir. Betta most ostensibly won't in the foreseeable future.

Trust your instincts. I think your thoughts are pretty good.
BTW, the soundtrack certainly contributed to that urgent feeling.

reply

She has nothing more to do with this family.
She leave all thing that represents this powerfull family.

I think she don´t running for the cooker, she is running looking for herself.

In the movie, this scene is an abrupt ending.
The director highligh this with a very intense music.

The ending is very quick, but the important things are closed.

But Emma did go to the cook, Antonio. There is a scene just a minute into the credits where she lies in his arms within a dimly-lit spring cave/cenote. I would've expected the bright outdoors, but t may have been a place to grieve and receive comfort from this man whom she now loved.

maybe because her husband told her the she doesn't exist and she didn't want to stay a moment more in his golden empty cage?

SPOILER ALERT

I think Eva is completely overlooked after the accident - she is always alone in the background and his parents get the news and she is left outside. This is possibly the last occasion she may be in their company and she has this huge news. No one is comforting or looking after her and I think she feels this may be her last chance to tell them.

If it wasn't for this end I would forget this film within a few hours...BUT, last 10 min is what makes it special.
