Why do people keep calling Gwen black?

She clearly isnt black or looks black, so why do ignorant people keep calling her black? Are white people and americas so ignorant that they call anyone who has brown skin black?

She doesnt even call herself black, because shes not.

Im British
Im Black
Im Beliebing

I know this is super old post but wanted to let you know somethings.

The show was advertised having Black Gwen in media and by some fans.

The thing is media and by extention people are incredibly sensitive to races now. Which is understandable but still annoying at times. I recall an american actress saying that she did not consider herself black just American got a lot, and I mean a lot, of controversity. Black community was especially enraged thinking she was ashamed of being black. And, she isn't really black according to your definition though to be honest with you I think your definition is also a bit rigid. Race is hard thing to really be sure about when you are mixed.

Anyway, so there is that. Not trying to cause misunderstanding though I think it is being a little too sensitive, but they are TV show and have to tread carefully.

Another thing is... well. This will sound a bit too wordly, but for maximum benefit of the show in terms of media exposure(OMG! Black Gwen! Frontpage material!) and appeal of the show to Black.

Media exposure... Webpages or articles want higher number of hits or whatever, and race issue especially Black related because of slave history is alway hot in the US. Appeal is similar in that the show will be more talked about in Black community than not if Gwen wasn't called Black.

Having Black Gwen will also make more Black people likely to tune in to check it out. I'm Asian American, and I do that too:)

So, it is more the show trying not to be offending(which I admit can be more offending sometimes) and the show and media taking advantage saying she is black than ignorance of the audience. They are just repeating the term they have been fed.

HOWEVER! I understand your frustration.

I think this situation itself shows how true equality of all race has long way to go. Anyone's race shouldn't be THAT much of a news despite the inconsistency with the legend.(which I agree can be unacceptable to people who like accuracy and faithfulness to the source)

My answer I gave months ago frankly should be the end of it, but unfortunately people are simply too stupid to accept the truth of the matter. Yes, the actress may be half Indian, that's all fine and dandy. But the show runners didn't go for that aspect; they instead deliberately cast her father and brother as outright black to give her a black heritage. Stop pretending otherwise. Just accept that the show runners cast ANY dark-skinned girl, in spite of ethnicity, as black and move along. I did.

reply

Excuse me. I think YOU are the stupid one since it seems you haven't even read what I wrote or did not understand.

I never refuted what you said. I just gave political reasons for WHY they intentionally made her "black" despite her ethnicity. It's just money and such matter with dash of ignorance.

And, I'm ignoring you.

reply

LOLOL what the...? I don't even. I back someone up and get put on ignore. I love the Internet.

reply

You accuse other people of being racist, then you make racist remarks yourself.
Are you any better than the "white people and americas"?

reply

Was her Indian ancestor from the Caribbean? If they were, then I'd question whether that they were 100% of Indian descent. I'm guessing her ancestor of Indian descent was mixed like Tatyana Ali (who is 50% East Indian and 50% Black).

Anyways, she was really smart to keep quiet about the issue. She'd never hear the end of if she came out saying that she was Latina or Indian.

reply

she is black and white

It's not an American thing at all, it's a white thing. Anything darker than white, most people call black. It's particularly glaring in the case of people of mixed parentage: everyone calls Obama black, when in fact he's half and half; why are people who are half white, half black, always labelled according to the black half? Because, however we have progressed in terms of tolerance, belief in equality and justice, and all that, we still live in a white-centered society, psychologically speaking. White is the standard to which most brains refer, for obvious historical and cultural reasons, and anything departing from the standard is instinctively labelled according to that.

No blacks say that not whites

when obama become president then they called him black when he was running he was mixed raced

@BB

She's a black woman---deal with it, and stop trying to claim she's not black simply because she's mixed---I call bull**** on that.

reply

Sorry, but she identifies as mixed race, not black. Deal with reality.

I played in the television series “Merlin” and I was cast as Guinevere, which was a surprise as a mixed actor and the production was very open-minded and forward-thinking, and it was about my talent as an actress not my color.

As I grow older, I pay less attention to what people post, I just watch their avatars.

Hello, I know I'm very late replying - I just saw this and want to clarify something about race in America (yes, I'm white, born and raised in Illinois).

Historically, there's this thing called the "one-drop" rule originating from slavery times. If you have even "one drop" of "African" blood, then you were "black." Doesn't matter if you're three-quarters white, you're still perceived as black. This mindset still remains in America, so that Obama just thinks of himself as "black," even though he's half white. If Obama was born in Britain, where there isn't the legacy of American slavery, he'd probably call himself "mixed race.

Blacks in Great Britain still had problems

plus Obama even if he is mixed raced hasnt helped race in anything

You're presuming that everyone answering in American. Upon looking at her, I presumed she was a mix of two different 'countries of national origin.' Perhaps, African with some Latin or Spanish or maybe western Asian.

I knew she was mixed by looking at her now Tommy Chong and Rob Schiender not so much

Some days you've just got to love the internet... the only place where people love to flaunt their ignorance. That is something I will never understand. There's no shame in not knowing everything, but you have the answer at the tip of your fingers, so why show everyone that you are lacking in proper vocabulary or general knowledge instead of looking up the information yourself? Why take the time to inform people that you are too lazy to bother learning something? In the same amount of time, you could have learned something.

If your question had been more respectful, I might have helped you. But considering the tone of your post, "what the heck". I'll pass.

First of all, I'm not in Britain. I am however quite confident that British citizens consider the Chinese and the Japanese as Asians, but I'll be happy to stand corrected if a Brit can explain.

There are many different ways to "label" people from broad geographical areas, depending on how you define those areas: what continent they live on, what main culture they belong to, where you put the "frontiers" enclosing the areas in question (geopraphical landmarks such as oceans, mountains, rivers...)... It isn't a matter of PC or not PC, just a way to think about the world and its people. There's really nothing to get excited about. Again, if you look into it a bit, I'm quite sure you will learn a thing or two and it will help you understand these different systems and why they exist.

why is it that ruasian which is in ASIA is EUROPEAN even though they have more in common with CHINA

Russia is a very large country with a great diversity of ethnic origins. I don't know why you think Russians, as a whole, have more in common with China than Europe. But I'm pretty sure that someone born and raised in Saint-Petersburg feels more at home in Stockholm or Krakow than in Beijing or Shanghai.

Man,she's not white and she's actually ugly, don't care if she's black, blue or green.

Enough with this politically BS! She was supposed to be one of the most beautiful girls in history, when both Arthur and Lancelot felt for her.

Do you have any sense of decency and look at the face of that actress? She's just plain dumb, an ugly ordinary common face like so so many daily faces you see every day. Should we say anything else just because she isnt't white? Grow up.

reply

I always thought she was pretty, especially when she smiles. But--as the old adage goes--beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I love (not) how you presume that everyone needs to have your OPINION of beauty.

Just some food for thought,

you're plain arrogant. and I suspect you're ugly. Otherwise you wouldn't come up with this nonsense that there is absolutely no criteria on what beauty or ugly is. Move on.

reply

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Actually, dear cristscu, you're kind of arrogant to imagine that your criteria for beauty is the same as everyone else's ideas. I stand by the fact that she is pretty. But even if she were ugly physically (which she isn't) at least she isn't ugly in attitude and behavior, as you are. Your suspicions are incorrect about my attractiveness, also. I'm typical girl-next-door pretty. Oh, and why don't you move on with your immature and clearly life-inexperienced attitudes. Beauty IS in the eye of the beholder. Have a great life.

Funny thing with black and white is that, no blacks are actually black, and no whites are actually white.
