Everyone on this board seems to miss the point in this

I think the main thrust of the story is not the lesbian aspect (which seems like a dirty old mans brain-fart) but the wanting of something that miss g could not have, having been trapped at the school all those years. Just as the children were in awe of miss g at the start, she was in awe of fiamma and her experience when she herself is almost a recluse with wild made up fantasies.

I think the subject of this film (lesbian teacher student antics at a boarding school) was always going to take over the main theme and I suppose that is the main pull and initial appeal anyway - mainly to dirty old men. Hence why the longest thread on this board is what constitutes lesbian rape. I refer to the fifth word of this post.

My views are not that well mapped out but seem to be the only actual thoughts on the story in this place.

"which seems like a dirty old mans brain-fart" The book was written by a woman, and the movie was directed a woman.

The book is quite different and doesn't play up the lesbian angle nearly as much as the relationship BETWEEN the teenage girls. It actually resembles a female Lord of the Flies" in a boarding school as much as it does "The Prime of Miss Brodie". Ms. G is an important character, but less important than in the movie.

I agree with the OP to some extent, but he/she goes too far in implying that true sapphic love is somehow "pure" while male interest in teenage lesbianism can only be predatory and the province of "dirty old men". Lesbians can be as predatory as males even if they're just trying to recapture their youth (aren't a lot of male predators too?). Moreover, the male interest in teenage lesbians can ALSO be more poetic than dirty. I love movies and books like this or "Picnic at Hanging Rock" or "Heavenly Creatures", but it really has nothing to with some dirty real-life sexual interest in teenage girls.

However, when someone DOES cross the line and starts sexually preying on young girls, they are a predator, whether they're male or female and however "pure" their motives. It doesn't matter that they might be haunted by a longing for lost youth like a lot of us are.

You make good points, except for referring to the lesbian aspect as "a dirty old man's brain fart". If you think this was something a dirty old man thought of, you probably aren't a lesbian. And if you are, well… You're just not right about this.

Because as a lesbian or bisexual myself, I can tell you that I related a lot to that aspect of the movie. So it's definitely not an old man's brain fart.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!
