The Karate Kid (2010) was really damn good. Surpasses original.

So, I just got back from seeing Jaden Smith's first star vehicle The Karate Kid (the movie had been sold out since the 11:15am show) and....wow. I was truly impressed as I only went in with modest expectations. Not only was it a very good remake, it's the best movie so far this summer, and it stands on it's own two feet and surpasses the original in a lot of ways (which one is better will probably be generational. From the standing ovation these kids at the theater I attended gave this film I'm pretty sure from 15 or so on down, it will be this one.) But first off, let me start by saying this:

To anyone who doubts that Jaden Smith can act (which he ironically already proved in The Pursuit of Happyness), is a star, or deserved this movie: See The Karate Kid. I don't care how you see it. Pirated. Bootleg. Or the old fashion way (like I saw it cause I'm cool like that) by buying a frickin' ticket and sitting in an auditorium with a bunch of cheering 10 year olds (I swear I've never seen kids give a movie a damn near standing ovation like they did during this film's finale).

Jaden Smith has just silenced his haters. From here on out, if you don't like Jaden Smith: fine. Whatever petty reason you've given yourself to make you not like an innocent 10 year old. Fine. But you can't say he's not talented. Cause he is. If nothing has proven it to you before, THIS will. He carries the film on his little shoulders, shows leading man qualities (has a 10 year old ever done that?!?!? And Im being serious here). Has a ten year old ever acted in a film and not only carried it but possessed the charm, charisma, quick wit, comedic timing, dramatic presence and physicality of a hero all in the same movie?!?!? I shutter to think, I couldn't think of any leaving the theater. If they have, please point them out to me so I can say bravo to them to.

His performance was truly great and the fact that he did all of his own stunts and clearly learned kung fu and looks not only believable but in command of the craft is some sort of a mini-miracle. This little dude is miniature Will Smith of the highest caliber. He WILL be a star (pun, intended). Only thing can stop that is, well, him. Barring any personal issues, the kid will go far. Very far. He has it all. And as cliche as it may sound the biggest development to come out of the Karate Kid is that "A Star is Born". Don't believe me: watch it for yourself.

But I digress, I only spent so much time on the Jaden issue because all the unwarranted hatred thrown his way is beyond disturbing. I have never seen such vitriolic speech directed towards a kid in my life. Not even the kid from Problem Child and he was a certified a-hole! But anyway, the movie is good. Jackie Chan was surprisingly really good (and I mean really really good like Oscar-nominee good) in a dramatic turn as Dre Parker's mentor. The action was better than the original's and the heart and soul was just as engaging and entertaining. Though lacking the iconic "wax on, wax off"-moment what they do with "jacket on, jacket off" was truly surprising and pretty good stuff when you realize what Mr. Han was really teaching him. Instead of the "Crane Kick" we do have another pose and it's pretty damn good too.

To me, the original will always be special. I remember Daniel-son, and Mr. Miyagi is a fuggin' legend in every sense of the word. I'm actually utterly surprised this remake was so well made and engaging. Even though every one in the theater knew the outcome, everyone was still cheering and/or elated and moved by the movies "big moments". That in itself is pretty impressive. It's like if people were still surprised even though they knew who the killer(s) were in Scream 4 before seeing it. Could you imagine that? Yea, I couldn't either. Which is why I'm surprised at how good this remake was.

Go see it.

It would've been better and more credible if the film were to stand on its own. Here's what I mean by that. The movie "Point Break" by Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze from 1991 was the inspiration of 2001's "The Fast and the Furious." Both films have the same concept of a young cop infiltrating a young "gang" or "clique" revolving a certain interest (surfing, street racing) to bring down a a criminal who everyone respects and the cop befriends him to the point that at the end of the film, he lets him go. See? both similar plots but each film stands on its own. This version of "KK" was good but not as good as the original, HOWEVER, if the film would've been titled differently and with a different set of circumstances then it would've been more credible because it's its own film rather than a near exact copy. The screenwriters, despite being creative with the locations and all, were limited to having Dre go through the exact same thing Daniel-san went through, right down to the places were Cheng hit him to match Daniel-san.

me and my girl who is a friend went monday afternoon. not many people were there which i like because i dont like being in packed theatres.

over all, i thought the movie was good. i enjoyed his acting, and the comedy.

me and my friend also hyped this movie too much because we were expecting a lot of fighting. however, only the beginning and the end held the martial arts, while the middle was training. i was disappointed by that.

this movie was the best movie Jackie Chan ever did in my opinion. i never really liked him in his martial arts/comedy movies like Rush Hour and his flop The Baby-sitter(something like that). in this movie he pulled off an amazing roll that surprised me. it kind of reminded me of Heath's roll in BrokeBack Mountain. How much hurt and pain is going through them and its hard for us to connect; but when we do its a powerful feeling.

i also felt some things weren't needed. i didnt think the kissing scene was needed simply because im not the romantic type. but it was funny. not disturbing and i wont be disturbed until i see kids actually have sex on film(then our society has reached a new level). i thought the talking in the car about the accident was not needed; as in, less words more action. dre saw the alcohol, saw the car, heard han say 'june 8 or july 8', saw him get in the driver's seat, saw the newspaper article on the hood, saw the glass sherds on the article. it would have been more powerful if dre would have analyzed the objects in his surroundings and put them together like a puzzle. then he could have got in the car with han, then after a moment of being silent and crying, find his strength and use that to pull han out the car.

i thought all that training was good but shouldnt have taken so much time.

ill be surprised if any of the asians who were actually in the movie be in anything else that reaches the states or international. but cheng was really good and i fell in love with the guy with the mohark. (asians are coming along way in american entertainment industry: Charice, The Stunners, Boa-let's hope they dont fade out too soon.)

i dont think jaden should play riley from the boondocks because i dont think itll be a good live-action movie. some animations are meant to stay animations.

over all i liked it; it was good. i wouldnt want to see it again though unless it came on TV, and i have nothing else to do. i wont buy it when it comes to DVD. and i actually forgot about the movie til i saw an ad, just now. so over all i give it a 7 out of 10.

I agree with OP. I went into this movie expecting to catch a 2 hour nap while fulfilling my children's wishes to see (using my 9-10 year old swooning girl voice) "Jaden" However what i got was a kick A$$ action film with some valuable lessons in friendship, respect, bridging cultural differences, dedication etc. As someone pointed out they hated the movie because u can't possibly get that Good in a matter of months. Boo kaka. U can't freaking do 90% of the crap that happenes in movies. Get over it. Sit back & enjoy the ride. Oscar calber humm maybe not so much. Clap & cheer at the end like a hormone driven teenager again. HECK YEAH! Well done Smith's! u are truely on your way to creating a Family DYNASTY! The Hilton's have hotels the Smiths have SUMMER BLOCK BUSTERS!!!!!!!

They are certainly on their way to that. How lucky is Will Smith to be the "King of the Box Office" himself and NOW his 11 YEAR OLD seed is following right in his footsteps and ruling at the box office? lol I tell you what. If Willow gets a starring role and opens this big, it just may be the most incredible family dynasty ever in Hollywood, in terms of box office success.

yeah this is a hollywood plant.

Everyone in the industry knows IMDB is the place to use sock puppets to talk up their film projects.

Nice try.

The original was way better!

Hahaha lol @ plant.

It's some delusional, paranoid schizo's on imdb. It's probably the fact that they are part of the troll culture that has infected this website that runs around votes 1s for certain movies, have multiple accounts, and votes 10s for certain films trolls want in the Top 250.

If im a plant, then you're part of an evil cult conspiracy of racist douchebags and lunatics. Pick one.

But for the record Im not plant, no one pays me to express my honest opinion of afilm. Calm yourself, my little occult friend.

Apparently these people are not aware of the infamous Batman fanboys that voted movies like 'The Godfather', 'The Shawshank Redemption' etc. 1s so that The Dark Knight could be #1 on the IMDb top 250

Okay dude, someone has to play watchdog here. Just because someone thinks the original was better does NOT make them a troll, but in fact reflects back on you as potentially trollish. You have a very serious bias against the older film that has been showing in your posts, and I have to admit is a bit annoying. I did really enjoy the new film, but the original is still better, and in my opinion more realistic. Sure the new film is prettier, and quite sweet in it's own way, but I do NOT believe that it surpasses the original, and I am not obligated to think so. If you insist that I must, then you sir (or ma'am) ARE in fact a troll, or at the very lest an extremist. So please, cut back on the anti original hate mongering?

Everyone keeps saying this "hollywood plant". I loved the movie & yes i used love, again I repeat not oscar caliber but it was a great teen movie & intro to a great future for Jaden. But please share how does one get this plant job & what r the perks. Do they pay cash (in this economy? Do u get an all expense paid trip to the studio in hollywood? Do you get to eat at a Hell's Kitchen studio taping with Chef Gordan Ramsey? Do u get free tickets to other releases from the same studio? Free DVD's? T-shirts? Popcorn? What is it? TELL ME!

If i ever get sick. Please take me to Dr. House!

I`m always entertained how Morita loonies are s***ting bricks whenever someone says that Jackie Chan was better in KK remake than Morita in the original. Yeah, yeah, Miyagi is an icon and Morita got an Oscar nom, blah, get over it, Chan is the legend and gave gave better performance. Especially in the drunken scene which was aces while Morita, a real life-drunk, was totally awful. A smart poster from another board said that Morita went with the "happy drunk" approach which didn`t work (for him) unlike Chan whose tragedy was felt. or something along those lines. But the point is that Morita was really a happy drunk in that scene and that was just rotten, man.

Also, Jackie can kick a$$ while Morita didn`t bother to learn karate when it was obvious they`ll make sequels. So we had to put up with his super-obvious stuntman. No such tricks with Jackie who made the character believable. I`m always taken out of the original when that stunt double jumps Johnny&co at the Halloween beating. So embarrassing. besides, they cast Morita over Toshiro Mifune who can kick a$$ like a pro because they wanted a comic Miyagi (regardless of figthing skill or lack thereof) instead of a dignified bushido type. So Jackie is a huge upgrade here because he gave both a terrific performance and a terrific fight.

Jaden is also an upgrade over Ralph Macchio because Jaden can act (I particualrly like that his reaction to Jackie`s drunkedness was understated), has charisma in spades and can fight like a pro. Unlike Macchio who admits to not having interest in pursuing martial arts. Well, it shows in 3 freakin` movies named KARATE Kid. So Jaden wins big time. The kid rocked. There.

Other actors comparison:

Billy Zabka and Zhenwei Wang - no complaints here. Zhenwei Wang didn`t have enough chance to develope Cheng (blame the script) but he did great with the limited screen time and his presence is really manacing but hawt. Zabka was, IMO the strongest KK actor by a landslide, just great, fantastic performance as Johnny. Beautiful guy too. Yum. Luv him. <3

Elisabeth Shue and Han Wen Wen - really liked both actresses. They are beautiful and while Ali was feisty, Meiying is just adorable. great chemistry with their leading men, Ralph and Jaden, too.

Taraji P. Henson and Randee Heller - this is the most thankless role in both movies cause what to make of an overworked mom who doesn`t stand up for her son? Not much and it doesn`t help that both women are written as comic relief of sorts. But I give Taraji an advantage because of unintentional will-they-won`t-they chemistry with Jackie, less embarrassing character and stronger screen presence.

Martin Kove and Rongguang Yu - the former is such a horrible actor but, damn, that was highly entertaining performance inspite or maybe because of it. The latter barely registered cause the script did nothing for him.

Cobra Kai and Fighting Dragons - the former are icons with well-developed personalities. Everyone who loves the original knows their names - Bobby, Tommy, Dutch, Jimmy (Johnny`s gang). Sure, performances are over the top B movie material but the chemistry makes them as believable bff`s as it gets. OTOH, we don`t know the names of Dragons save for Cheng and there`s no character development save for Chinese Bobby`s brief display of compassion.

So, in a nutshell, remake scores with its good guys and mom, while girlfriends are a tie but the original`s bad guys sweep the remake`s leg.
